Altmünster am Traunsee offers several different starting points for planning a trip: church art, historic architecture, crafts and activities around the lake. Culture and architectural history

The Calvary Church is one of the sights in Altmünster. In the parish church of Altmünster, the confessional chapel houses a nativity scene by Johann Georg Schwanthaler, featuring seven scenes. The Eggerhaus offers another way to explore the history of the town: once a residential building typical of an old Altmünster farmstead, it was dismantled and rebuilt using its original parts. This brings sacred art in a specific church space and the historic architecture of a residential building together as distinct cultural topics.

Crafts and cultural activities

The Handwerkshaus, opened in 2025 below the Viechtau local history museum, offers something different: its forge hosts craft demonstrations and blacksmithing workshops for small groups. If you would like to plan such an activity, it is advisable to arrange a suitable time in advance.

Another, different kind of water-based option is Solarbad Altmünster: a solar-heated outdoor swimming pool right on Lake Traunsee. The pool complex includes a large swimming pool, a children's pool, a shady playground and a dedicated beach volleyball court; several bathing jetties lead to the lake. Introductory sailing focuses on sailing on the lake, while Solarbad offers a range of pools, recreation areas and bathing jetties.

Getting to Gmundnerberg

The Gmundnerberg Nature Trail can be reached from Altmünster railway station via Bahnhofstraße and the entrance to hiking trail No. 8. The station is a stop on the ÖBB Salzkammergut Railway (line 170). The Salzkammergut Shuttle, line 20, also runs directly from Altmünster railway station to Gmundnerberg. When planning your journey, you can choose between reaching the trail via Bahnhofstraße and hiking trail No. 8, or taking the direct shuttle. Check the current train and shuttle timetables before departure.
