Discover Windischgarsten
Accommodation in Windischgarsten
Windischgarsten combines its location on the edge of Kalkalpen National Park with viewpoints, geological themed trails and opportunities to explore local history. When planning your stay, you can choose different focuses: a short educational trail, a route through the landscape or insights into the history of the town.
Mountain Views and Landscape
To the south, the Haller Mauern mountains frame Windischgarsten. The 21-metre-high glass National Park Panoramic Tower Wurbauerkogel, with more than six floors, offers views of the mountain landscape. In good visibility, its observation platform affords a 360-degree panorama encompassing 21 peaks over 2,000 metres high. The views therefore depend on visibility.
Geology and landscape are also the focus of two themed trails, but on different scales. The Geological Educational Trail follows a circular route of around 100 metres, with ten stations featuring 40 objects from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. It is suitable for families, pushchairs, wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments. The Million-Year Trail, by contrast, brings the diverse landscape of Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen and its 250-million-year-old geological history to life at around 26 stations.
The Million-Year Trail follows the historic Proviantweg. For centuries, provisions and iron were transported along it over the Hengstpass. The themed trail thus combines geological features with the history of a trade and supply route. The Veichltal circular hiking trail offers a different focus: it leads from Windischgarsten through the Veichltal valley, around Sonnwendkogel and Giererkogel, and back to Windischgarsten.
Activities at Wurbauerkogel
The description of 3D archery at Wurbauerkogel distinguishes between a panoramic course with about 25 different 3D animal figures and a family course with ten activity stations in total. The family course is listed as taking approximately two hours. This time estimate helps you gauge the length of the course; it does not indicate how long the panoramic course takes.
Wurbauerkogel Bike Park has four mountain bike trails of varying difficulty: Blue Lollipop, Big Red, Red Root-Carpet and Black Widow. On 4 September 2026, lift operations were paused, so the bike park was not maintained or supervised. It continued to be used at visitors’ own risk. The Wurbauerkogel Alpine Coaster was also out of operation in summer 2026 because a chairlift was scheduled to be rebuilt.
Local History and Culture
The approximately one-hour guided tour is a cultural walk through the town centre. It provides information about Windischgarsten’s history, sights and economic development. In this way, it complements the nature and geology themes with an exploration of the town that brings together several aspects of local development.
The Windischgarsten Local History Museum displays Roman finds unearthed during several excavations connected with the Roman post station of Gabromagus. A visit to St. James’s Parish Church offers another historical point of interest: it was consecrated on 14 August 1562, and its altars and pulpit are particularly worth seeing. The church park includes the Psalms Path, which invites visitors to meditate. When choosing your outings, you can therefore take into account different interests, from nature trails and archaeological finds to church history.
