The Tschengla plateau lies in Bürserberg at an altitude of 1,250 metres. It is home to Neolithic stone circles with a history spanning thousands of years. Other attractions include the Paarhof Buacher farmstead and local history museum, the parish church dedicated to Saint Joseph, and trails with different focuses. Explore Bürserberg through specific themes: Walser culture and architectural history, an archaeological site, or a hike with scenic views.

Culture and history in Bürserberg

The Paarhof Buacher local history museum offers a vivid insight into the former life and work of mountain farmers. It also brings the Walser people’s distinctive architecture and culture to life. According to the Federal Monuments Office list dated 19 June 2026, the Paarhof Buacher farmstead and local history museum in Bürserberg is protected as a historic monument by decree.

The parish church of Saint Joseph has retained its Baroque character to this day. Its onion dome, visible from far away, gives it its distinctive appearance in the Alpine mountain landscape. In 1736, after Bürserberg separated from Bürs, the church was elevated to the status of Bürserberg’s parish church.

There are four information boards at the stone circles. They provide an overview map and further information about their history and significance. The map and explanations answer two different questions: the map helps you find your way, while the additional information explores the subject of the Neolithic circles in greater depth.

Trails and landscapes

The “Traces of History” cultural trail starts at the “Bürserberg Museum” bus stop. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable separately. Another hike, “Schesamurbruch-Tschengla,” leads from Bürserberg to the Tschengla plateau and offers views of the mighty Schesamurbruch, Europe’s largest debris flow. The two trails therefore differ in their stated focus: one starts at a bus stop, while the other leads to the plateau and offers views of the debris flow.

The trail to the Ausserberg waterfall is designated as easy, family-friendly and suitable for strollers.
