Lech: Hiking, Trails and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Lech
If you are looking for a hotel in Lech, you can use your planned activities as a guide when planning your trip. The trails around the village range from a long-distance route to circular and themed trails. You can also explore regional history, visit a museum in the Huber-Hus and discover special excursion destinations. This makes it easy to choose which hikes, cultural experiences and other activities to prioritise during your stay.
Hiking trails and landscapes around Lech
The Lechweg is around 125 kilometres long. It runs from the source of the River Lech near Formarinsee in Lech am Arlberg, in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, to the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen. Along the way, the route passes through one of Europe’s last wild river landscapes.
The Arlberg Trail connects Lech with ZĂĽrs, Stuben, St. Christoph and St. Anton. It comprises three stages and 40 kilometres of hiking trails. The waymarked circular trail is 52 kilometres long in total, and some sections are covered by cable car.
You can also include Formarinsee in your plans: the Lech local bus runs to its final stop at Formarinalpe. From there, the lake is a 20-minute walk. If you plan to take the bus to the lake, check the timetable in advance.
Walser history and the Huber-Hus
The Walser people settled in the Tannberg area in the first half of the 14th century. The oldest documentary evidence of the Walser people in Tannberg is dated 11 March 1453. This date refers to the surviving record, while the migration took place earlier. This difference in timing brings regional history to life without treating the two as a single event.
The Lech Museum is housed in the Huber-Hus, a building dating from the late 16th century. Visitors can learn about rural domestic and working life. Alongside a permanent exhibition, there are special exhibitions exploring socially relevant topics of the present day. A visit to the museum therefore connects the history of the house and rural everyday life with changing contemporary themes.
Themed trails and special excursion destinations
The Arlenzauberweg runs from the mountain station of the Lech-Oberlech cable car, past Libellensee and the flower meadows on Schlegelkopf, to the Rud-Alpe; it can also be walked in the opposite direction. More than 20 stations introduce visitors to the special characteristics of animals and plants. On the ascent to Balmalp through Sagenwald, figures created during a sculpture symposium bring the trail to life.
The Green Riddle Ring is a family trail from Lech to the Rud-Alpe. With a riddle book, you can solve tasks together along the way; ask locally whether the book is available. Another way to combine trails and scenery is the third stage of the Green Ring: it leads from Zug via Kriegerhorn and Oberlech to Lech. The Gipslöcher nature reserve extends across the fields of the Kriegeralpe.
The Lech Forest Swimming Pool is located between Lech and Zug am Arlberg and can be reached by local bus or on foot. Facilities include a 25-metre sports pool, an aquafit pool with bubble loungers and massage jets, a children’s and baby pool, and a wide wave slide.
More experiences in Lech
The Skyspace concept, featuring light art developed for it by James Turrell, can be experienced at sunrise and sunset when the dome is open. The experience is weather-dependent. Tickets for tours and the shuttle to Skyspace-Lech are available online or in person at the tourist office in Lech; check the latest booking information before your visit.
The Lech ZĂĽrs ski area is listed as having 300 kilometres of ski runs. This figure may vary depending on how the ski area is defined. Alongside the hiking trails described above, winter sports and an art experience tied to sunrise or sunset are therefore different options to consider when planning your stay.
