Sunday: Hiking, sound art and Walser history
Accommodation in Sunday
Sunday combines hiking destinations with Walser history and natural sound. The destinations below offer different highlights: from Sonntag-Stein and Buchboden to Walser history and regional themes of the biosphere park.
Hiking in Sonntag-Stein and Buchboden
The small Sonntag-Stein cable car is located directly opposite the biosphärenpark.haus and takes visitors to the Sonntag-Stein hiking area in just a few minutes. The Wandfluh via ferrata starts at the cable car’s mountain station and is rated difficulty level C. The Culinary Pleasure Route, by contrast, starts at the cable car’s valley station in Sonntag.
The Wangspitze circular tour leads from Buchboden to Wangspitze and onward to the Gadental core zone of the biosphere park. The 1,873-metre summit offers panoramic views of the Great Walser Valley and the Lechquellen Mountains. To reach the Wangspitze trail, take bus L570 to the “Sonntag, Seilbahn Stein” stop and then on-demand bus L571 to the “Buchboden, Kirche” stop. Check bus schedules before setting out.
From Sonntag-Buchboden, an easy, family-friendly, stroller-accessible circular tour of 5.18 kilometres leads to Bad Rothenbrunnen. The historic, heritage-listed building is located in Gadental, within a core zone of the biosphere park. To compare the two circular tours: Bad Rothenbrunnen is all about the route length and circular format; the Wangspitze tour focuses on the route into the core zone and panoramic views from the summit.
Klangraum.Stein is an interactive project exploring nature and its soundscape. Artistic installations accompany the hiking trail to the Echo Wall. If you would like to experience the landscape through sound as well, this project offers a distinctive highlight. Winter hikes and snowshoe hikes are also possible in the Sonntag-Stein hiking area.
Walser history and regional themes
In the heart of Sonntag, the GroĂźes Walsertal Museum is housed in a historic semi-detached building, one of the oldest houses in the village. Over the centuries, the building served as a home, dairy, bakery and inn before becoming a museum in 1981. Its 15 rooms display artefacts from Walser life and offer insights into their history; changing special exhibitions complement the topics.
The biosphärenpark.haus is a visitor centre for the UNESCO Großes Walsertal Biosphere Reserve. The exhibition “Walser on the Move” offers insights into life and work in the Great Walser Valley, as well as the production of mountain cheese. A treasure hunt for children is also available. The biosphärenpark.haus biosphere park shop sells local cheese and sausage specialities.
The cultural highlights differ: the museum is dedicated to Walser history and presents changing special exhibitions; the biosphärenpark.haus exhibition focuses on life and work in the Great Walser Valley, as well as the production of mountain cheese.
