When choosing a place to stay in Cerovlje, you can weigh cultural history, time in nature and a clearly defined bike ride. The Church of the Holy Trinity, the ponds and the Staza vodopada (614) route offer different ways to explore. More historical sites can be found in the wider destination of Općina Cerovlje.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Cerovlje dates back to the 15th century. It preserves remnants of frescoes by an unknown master from the time it was built. A millstone bearing a Glagolitic inscription is built into the south façade. Another ecclesiastical artefact is the gilded chalice from the 16th century, owned by the parish church of the Assumption of Mary.

Ponds, Fishing and Cycling

The ponds of Cerovlje offer green surroundings for walks or picnics. Freshwater fishing is also possible there with a permit. As permit and fishing regulations may change, check them before your trip.

The Staza vodopada (614) passes through Cerovlje on its loop between Pagubica and Pazin. The full route is a 39-kilometre, moderately difficult loop from Pazin back to Pazin. Unlike a walk or picnic by the ponds, the bike ride is clearly defined by its length and difficulty. It is a good idea to check the current route conditions before setting out.

Festivals and Railway History

Cerovlje has a carnival tradition that revives older customs; dates vary from year to year. The Sopci i kantaduori gathering held its 29th edition in 2026. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the date for the relevant year.

Railway history is also part of Cerovlje’s story: the construction of the Divača–Pula line increased the town’s importance in 1876. In the wider destination of Općina Cerovlje, Cerovlje also had a pumping station where steam locomotives were supplied with water and coal.

More Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination of Općina Cerovlje

In Draguć, the former settlement was rebuilt to a precise plan after being destroyed by fire during the Uskok War of 1615 to 1618. The Church of St Elijah there is a Romanesque building from the late 12th century, made of two-coloured stone blocks. In Gradinje, the Church of All Saints was built in 1604; frescoes and Glagolitic graffiti lie beneath layers of plaster. Grimalda adds to the regional picture with a viewpoint on a 447-metre-high hill in central Istria. In the wider destination of Općina Cerovlje, the Church of the Holy Spirit near the railway station in Borut was restored in 1560, as shown by a Glagolitic inscription above the entrance. Also in Borut, locals hand-shaped clay from the Borut stream for centuries and fired it in field kilns known as “frnaže”.
