Anžići combines a compact settlement with a rural landscape shaped by agriculture and associated with vineyards and olive growing. The remains of an Early Byzantine church near the village are of particular interest. Anžići can thus be explored through its cultural landscape and an archaeological site, without equating this small village with a larger centre.

Archaeological traces near Anžići

The remains of an Early Byzantine church lie below Muntajana Hill, near Anžići. Excavations took place in 1972 and 1975. The archaeological evidence includes mosaic floors, architectural sculptures and church furnishings. Stylistic comparisons date the church to the middle of the 6th century. The combination of architectural fragments, mosaics and furnishings gives the site a specific historical context: it is not just one visible detail, but several types of archaeological evidence that together offer insight into the church.

The landscape is also part of the destination’s character. Vineyards and olive growing are associated with Anžići’s rural agriculture. If you want to consider both a small settlement and cultural history and agricultural scenery when choosing a destination, you will find two different starting points here for planning your trip.

Travel planning information

Anžići is on a local road, 2 km from Croatia’s state road D21, between Vižinada and Baderna. This information provides a general sense of the location between the two places named and the state road. Check your specific route and road conditions separately before travelling.

The wider destination of Općina Višnjan has other cultural and historical and landscape features that you can consider independently of the local characteristics of Anžići. The old part of Višnjan is situated on a hill; closely spaced stone houses and narrow lanes define its appearance. A Baroque loggia stands in the main square. The Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot is known for its 14th-century frescoes and graffiti, including Glagolitic inscriptions.

Culture and activities in Općina Višnjan

The religious buildings in the wider destination of Općina Višnjan also have different historical associations. The Church of Saint Matthew in Cerion was built in 1588; its façade, with a bell gable and two bells, was renovated in 1935. The Church of Saint James in Bačva dates from 1628 and was built on the site of an earlier church. The Church of Saint Helen of the Cross in Markovac dates from the 14th century. These examples offer different historical and architectural points of interest for a visit focused on cultural history.

Višnjan Observatory is a public observatory registered in 1992. Its scientific focus is on small bodies in the solar system and their interactions with Earth. Group visits are available year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory lecture on a scientific or astronomical topic and a tour of the observatory, the telescope dome and the Stone Circle. Weather permitting, it also includes outdoor telescope viewing. When planning, it is important to distinguish between the group programme offered and the weather-dependent observation.

The wider destination offers different options for routes and scenery. The marked Owl Trail is 7.7 kilometres long, suitable for family walks and starts in a small pine grove near Višnjan cemetery. It leads to the landscaped Vena viewpoint, from where you can see olive groves, vineyards and the sea. The Star Trail is an easy, undemanding route for families and recreational cyclists. It starts and ends in front of Višnjan Town Hall and leads to Tičan, where visitors can see the new observatory building with its telescope dome and the Stone Circle installation.

The Venetian Lion Trail offers a different timeframe: the route is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours. It passes through historic Višnjan from Antun Korlević Square, under the arch with the Venetian lion, to the old village of Barat and back. The regional routes thus differ not only in their scenery and destinations, but also in the stated time requirements.
