Višnjan offers several different starting points for planning a trip: a public observatory, a historic town centre, trails through forests and vineyards, and opportunities to explore wine and regional produce. You can shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most, without combining the sights and trails into a single tour.

Observatory and Astro Night

Zvjezdarnica Višnjan is a public observatory. Its scientific focus is on asteroids, comets and meteoroids. The Astro Night programme also explores astronomy, combining a talk with a guided tour of the observatory and telescope dome. Weather permitting, celestial objects visible in the sky are observed with an amateur telescope on the lawn in front of the observatory. The programme concludes with a laser-guided tour of the spring and summer constellations. As programme details and availability may change, check the information for your travel dates.

In the wider destination of Općina Višnjan, group visits to Višnjan Observatory are available year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory talk on a scientific or astronomical topic, as well as tours of the observatory, telescope dome and Stone Circle. Outdoor telescope viewing takes place in suitable weather conditions.

Old town and architectural history

Explore the historic town centre on foot from Antun-Korlević Park. The route passes the 15th-century Gothic Church of Saint Anthony and a gate bearing a Venetian lion from 1517, before reaching the old square. There, features of the historic streetscape include sections of the 13th- and 14th-century town walls, a 27-metre-high bell tower, an 18th-century loggia and a cistern. The 19th-century Church of Saints Quiricus and Julietta is also on the old square.

The Gothic stone Church of Saint Anthony, with its bell gable, stands on the road from Višnjan to Poreč. Inside the church are legends from the life of the saint and parts of a Christological cycle; access to the interior may vary. Antun-Korlević Square is also home to the Sunčev tron sculpture and a sundial. From the old town’s viewpoint, the view stretches over green fields and vineyards to the sea in the direction of Poreč and Tar; visibility depends on the weather.

The chapels also tell the story of changes in the area. The Neo-Gothic Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene was moved in 1884 from its former site in a cemetery near Saline to its present location. A single gravestone from the former church is set into the stone staircase of the present-day chapel. The former Chapel of Saint Roch stood in the town square until it was demolished in 1914. Its church furnishings were transferred to a new Neo-Romanesque chapel near Saline, completed in 1923.

Trails between town, forest and viewpoints

The Sovina staza is 7.7 kilometres long. It starts in the small pine grove by the Višnjan cemetery and runs along forest and gravel tracks to Tićan before returning to Višnjan. Along the way are a former quarry, lavender plantings and old oak trees. From the Vena viewpoint, the view stretches over olive groves and vineyards to the sea, weather permitting.

The Zvjezdana staza follows a different route: it starts in the town centre, passes through the town, then follows forest tracks and goes through vineyards and surrounding villages to Tićan, before returning to Višnjan. The route is described as gentle and suitable for families and leisure visitors. The Staza venecijanskog lava, in turn, links historic Višnjan with the old village of Barat before returning to Višnjan. You can therefore choose between the landscape described along the Sovina staza, the route described as gentle, the Zvjezdana staza, and a route that takes in Barat.

Wine and regional produce

Višnjan’s visitor offerings include local wines and sparkling wines, visits to cellars and tasting rooms, and products from family-run businesses. These include olive oil, honey and other Istrian specialities. If you are interested in these offerings, you can make them a distinct focus of your trip.
