Krk offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: architectural history and Frankopan heritage, outdoor trails, coastal activities and local specialities. These different themes provide practical ideas for your visit.

Cultural history from the cathedral to seafaring

Krk Cathedral was built in the 5th century as a three-nave early Christian basilica on the remains of Roman baths. The cathedral treasury houses a gilded Frankopan altarpiece dating from 1477. Frankopan Castle is the only surviving secular medieval monument in Krk. Together, these examples represent different eras and perspectives: early Christian sacred architecture, a work of art from 1477 and secular medieval architectural history.

The Krk Interpretive Centre presents Frankopan heritage, replicas of medieval weapons and outdoor archaeological monuments. The Maritime Heritage Interpretive Centre in the old town introduces the island’s maritime tradition interactively; its activities include a sailing simulator. The cultural theme therefore encompasses not only architectural history and archaeology, but also the maritime past.

Walking trails and a cycling route

H134 Tajne napuštenog naselja is an easy, 8.5-kilometre circular trail. It starts at Krk’s Upper Town Gate and heads towards Lakmartin. Scattered remains of the abandoned settlement of Lizer, depopulated in the 19th century, lie near the route. The second trail, H127 Šetnja zelenim poluotokom, is an easy, 8.1-kilometre walking trail in Krk, suitable for recreational walkers and families. The two distances differ by just 0.4 kilometres; H134 is described as a circular trail heading towards Lakmartin, while H127 is described as suitable for recreational walkers and families. The B-427 Putovima sedam sela cycling route starts at the Krk Sports Centre. Check the current trail conditions before visiting H134.

Getting there, beaches and landscape

The beaches in the town of Krk have rocky or sandy seabeds; facilities include beach volleyball, playgrounds, diving centres and sailing centres. When choosing a beach, both the seabed and facilities such as sports or play areas may be relevant. Prniba offers a different landscape: Aleppo pine forest, as well as access to small secluded beaches and rocky shores. So alongside beach facilities, forest and coastal scenery are also options to consider when planning your trip.

Olive oil and local sweet treats

Kuća maslinovog ulja Nono offers information about olive oil production and tastings. Imbrijagon is a fragrant, dry biscuit traditionally prepared in Krk before holidays. Krk Princess Cake is linked to a local legend: the story connects the cake with the 15th-century wedding of Nikola Frankopan and Dorotea. The culinary themes are therefore quite distinct: from information and tastings to a holiday tradition and a historical tale.
