The Crkva Presvetog Otkupitelja, the Church of the Holy Redeemer, brings together sacred architecture, Ivan Meštrović’s work, and the sculptor’s family history in Ružić. It is the final resting place of Meštrović and his closest family members.

The Church of the Holy Redeemer and Meštrović

The church was built between 1928 and 1930 to a design by Ivan Meštrović. On Paraćeva glavica, which is associated with the village of Ružić, the massive stone structure stands on a 20-metre-high rise above Petrovo polje. Its form, burial site, and location give the place a distinctive cultural and historical context.

From Otavice, you can reach the church on foot in ten minutes. You can drive to the entrance. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 9 am to 3 pm. The church is closed on Mondays and public holidays; check the hours before your visit.

Otavice is also connected to Meštrović’s biography within the wider destination of Općina Ružić: the sculptor lived there until the age of 16. The Meštrović family home remains the centre of the village.

Sacred Sites and Archaeological History

Another site associated with sacred history is the Chapel of St Mary in Ružić. It was rebuilt in the late 1980s. The chapel houses a wooden Madonna believed to have originated in Tyrol.

In 2005, a parish museum opened in Gradac, within Općina Ružić, in the crypt of the parish church. The parish church was built over a medieval early Christian church dedicated to St Peter; parts of the older building have been preserved in the crypt. The surviving structures at this site therefore date back further than the present church building.

The archaeological site of Balina glavica is located in Umljanovići, within the wider destination of Općina Ružić. Finds from the Bronze Age and antiquity have been discovered there. In the first centuries AD, Municipium Magnum, an important urban centre in the Dalmatian hinterland, stood on this site. In the decades before Christ, the fortified Illyrian-Dalmatian city of Sinodium was located there. The two sites belong to distinctly different periods: the pre-Christian fortified city was followed by the urban centre of the first centuries AD.

The ancient Via Gabiniana also passes through the wider Ružić area. It connected Burnum, Promona, Magnum, Andertium, and Salona, offering another historical perspective on the region’s connections.

Petrovo polje, Rivers, and Mountains

Ružić lies on the edge of the Moseć range, whose slopes descend towards Petrovo polje and the Čikola. Within the wider destination of Općina Ružić, Petrovo polje forms the central area, and the Čikola flows through the field. The municipality lies between Svilaja and Moseć. These details help distinguish the landscape around Ružić from the wider surroundings.

Near Otavice, the Otavac stream flows into the Čikola. An old watermill still stands on the Otavac near Otavice. The slopes of Svilaja and Moseć are designated for hiking and hunting recreation. In the wider regional context, the Planinarsko društvo Svilaja association maintains hiking trails on Svilaja and operates the Orlove stine mountain hut on its slopes. Before hiking, check local conditions and find out in advance about access to the hut.

Cheese traditionally made in a bag of animal skin is also associated with the area around Ružić.
