Tranum: Nature, Hiking and History
Accommodation in Tranum
Tranum combines nature and hiking experiences with reminders of local history. Its natural landscape includes the 2,700-hectare nature national park and the area around Tranum; an 11-kilometre circular hike leads through Ingeborgs Bakker to Fosdalen. At the same time, a memorial and Tranum Church recall different chapters in the area’s history. This gives Tranum several highlights to consider when choosing your destination.
Natural surroundings and getting around
Tranum Nature National Park is on state-owned land and offers visitors nature experiences. Around Tranum, the landscape is shaped by dunes, dune heath, dune hollows, shallow lakes, open pine forest and forest clearings. The area is also home to threatened species listed on the Red List. For particularly good views, visit the observation tower north of Overklitten Sø. A yellow hiking trail runs through Alvig Bakker, north of the lake.
There are several parking areas in Tranum Klitplantage. The area south of the plantation can be reached by public transport. There is a forest playground near Tranum, with a toilet next to it. The playground is also the starting point for the Tranum-Fosdal circular hike.
Hiking the Tranum-Fosdal route
The Tranum-Fosdal circular hike is 11 kilometres long. It leads through Ingeborgs Bakker to Fosdalen, a narrow valley. The route also goes to Bavnehøj. At 83.4 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in Jammerbugt Municipality. The return route follows the upper edge of an old coastal cliff, with repeated views of the sea.
You can shorten the route, for example, to around 2.7, 6 or 7 kilometres. This means you can choose shorter distances as well as the 11-kilometre loop. The different distances offer a practical comparison for planning your hike, without limiting the tour to a single length. Tranum-Fosdal is certified as a Premium Route by the German Hiking Institute.
Local history and culture
On 13 August 1940, two English bombers crashed in Tranum Klitplantage. The crews of both aircraft lost their lives. On 13 August 2013, a local history group from the churches in Lerup and Tranum, together with Naturstyrelsen, erected a memorial in honour of the crew members who were killed.
Tranum Church was built around the year 1200 from granite blocks in the Romanesque style. The church is very well preserved and retains, among other things, original windows in the north wall. Near Tranum, south of Fosdalen, is the Fosdalen Nature Centre. Its exhibition covers the geology, nature and cultural history in and around Fosdalen.
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Tranum, these different highlights can help you choose your destination: the hiking route connects several types of landscape and offers different distances, while the church, memorial and nature centre represent architecture as well as local culture and history. Consider which of these aspects is most important to your travel plans.
