Lakolk Between Beach, Nature and History

If you are looking for a hotel in Lakolk, it is worth considering the area in terms of the interests you have for your stay: Lakolk Beach is known for activities by the water, Lakolk Sø for birdwatching, and preserved beach huts offer a glimpse into the history of the seaside resort.

Beach and Activities by the Water

Lakolk Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. If this certification is important to you, check its status again before travelling. The firm sand is suitable for cycling on the beach, and there are also shallow bathing areas. The 9 km stretch of car-free beach between Lakolk and Sønderstrand is ideal for walks. Visitors can park close to the sea along a 2 km stretch of coastline at Lakolk Beach.

If you would like to watch windsurfers at the beach, you can head to the northern part, where windsurfers can be seen. The Rømø Kite Festival is also held at Lakolk Beach and features thousands of kites. Dates and format may change. If the festival is important to your trip, check the latest event details before making plans.

Toilets at the beach are installed temporarily from mid-April to early September. Check again before your trip to confirm this seasonal provision. Public toilets with facilities for people with disabilities are available in Lakolk’s shopping centre. If you rely on these facilities, check their availability locally.

Birdwatching at Lakolk Sø

Lakolk Sø is a birdwatching spot, with good views of the lake from the path. Species that breed in the area include bitterns, marsh harriers, bearded reedlings and water rails. Their presence varies seasonally and from year to year, so the wildlife you see will not be the same at every time of year.

Please note the seasonal access restriction: access to Lakolk Sø is prohibited during the breeding season. Follow the current local signs and notices. This helps distinguish observing the lake from entering its protected surroundings, while respecting the applicable restriction.

Seaside Resort and Historical Development

An inventory updated in 2020 records that 22 of the 37 beach huts built for the Lakolk North Sea resort in 1898 still remain. The establishment of the Lakolk seaside resort on Rømø in 1898 marked the beginning of tourism on Rømø and throughout North Schleswig. This makes 1898 the starting point of tourism development, while a later phase is associated with the Rømø Dam: tourism on Rømø picked up again after it opened in 1948.

These two historical milestones help put Lakolk in context not only as a beach destination, but also as a place with a long history as a seaside resort. The surviving beach huts provide a tangible connection to the founding of the North Sea resort; tourism on Rømø continued to develop in a later phase.

Practical Information

Bus route 285 runs between Skærbæk on the mainland and Havneby on Rømø. On Rømø, most buses stop in Lakolk, but some do not. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can plan the right connection for your trip.

There is an off-leash dog area west of the campsite in Lakolk. Dogs may run free there year-round; follow the local signs and notices. This information adds a practical aspect for visitors to the beach and nature, without making any claims about the facilities at individual hotels.
