Hjerting combines a distinctive coastal landscape with a historic town centre and Hjerting Church. These themes may appeal to different interests when choosing a place to stay: the northern stretch of coast features a steep cliff edge, the Hjerting Energisti initially follows the Wadden Sea, and the church stands on a green hill overlooking Ho Bugt. The old town centre also has relatively well-preserved, winding streets, along with works of art connected to the sea, sky and materials from the harbour. The landscape, local history and art thus offer different perspectives on Hjerting.

The Coast and Hjerting Energisti

In the northern stretch of Hjerting’s coastline, a steep cliff edge rises 10 to 15 m above the sea. Hjerting’s coast lacks a marsh fringe to soften the waves; the sea has shaped dunes and coastal slopes there. The cliff edge, dunes and slopes represent different forms of coastal landscape: a steep elevation and other landforms shaped by the sea. Together, they give this stretch of coast a varied landscape.

The Hjerting Energisti is 4.8 km long and initially follows the Wadden Sea, including along the Hjerting seafront promenade. For planning a route, its length and course provide different points of reference: the distance gives an indication of the route’s scale, while its beginning by the Wadden Sea describes its connection to the landscape. The seafront promenade is a specific section of the initial route. This makes it possible to understand the route both in terms of its length and its connection to the coast.

Town Centre and Harbour Role

The winding streets of the old town centre around Guldagervej and Hjerting Byvej are relatively well preserved. This townscape brings together a distinctive street layout and Hjerting’s history. From the 16th century onwards, the town served as a shipping port for Varde; it reached its peak in the 18th century. These two dates place its former role as a port in a historical context, while the streets define the old town centre. Thus, a well-preserved area and Hjerting’s historic role as a shipping port for Varde sit side by side.

Hjerting Church: Setting and Art

Hjerting Church stands on a green hill overlooking Ho Bugt. Its altar wall consists of figures arranged across the wall, depicting biblical themes. Robert Jacobsen created them from old, discarded iron from the harbour in Esbjerg and covered some sections with gold. The arrangement of the figures and their biblical themes are thus combined with unusual material and partial gilding.

Two abstract stained-glass artworks by Robert Jacobsen are located above the doors in the southeast and southwest of the church interior. They portray the colours and light of the sky and sea, as well as clouds and rain over Ho Bugt at different times of day. Unlike the figures on the altar wall, the windows use abstract motifs of colour and light. The two art forms therefore create different effects: biblical figures on the altar wall and abstract depictions of the sky, sea and weather above the doors.
