Store Darum
Accommodation in Store Darum
Store Darum is located on Breum Banke, which rises 15 metres above the marshland. The settlement has been situated on this hill since the 13th century. From here, you can enjoy views across meadows and of the dikes along the Wadden Sea. This provides a clear thematic framework for planning your trip: you can explore Store Darum through its location, its architectural history, and its old church path as distinct points of interest.
Marshland, village character, and historic land divisions
West of Store Darum, land division patterns can still be seen, showing how individual farms’ lands were divided into marshland, arable land, heath, and moor. These different landscape types give the historic divisions definition: rather than one uniform area, several clearly named categories sit side by side. Store Darum’s original street layout is also highly valued for its preservation. Together with the land divisions, it offers a perspective on the character of the village that goes beyond individual buildings: it takes in both the settlement and the division of the land to its west.
Darum Church and historical remembrance
Darum Church is a Romanesque tufa church built around 1200. The tower and porch, by contrast, are in the Late Gothic style of the 15th century. This distinction makes the architecture particularly interesting: the construction period and style of different parts of the church can be considered separately. The baptismal crown above the font is considered unique. Its painted date is read as 1652; 1632 is also possible.
Another historic building is Darum Parsonage: the main house dates from 1720. Nearby, a memorial stone commemorates H. F. Feilberg, particularly his work as a collector of folk traditions and researcher. Thus, a dated main house and a memorial to the study of folk traditions add to the view of the church’s architecture. Visitors interested in the village’s cultural history will find a range of subjects here—from Romanesque church architecture and Late Gothic features to the commemoration of collecting folk traditions.
Darum Church Path and recreation
Darum Church Path is one of the longest and oldest church paths in Denmark and is still used both for transport and recreation. The centuries-old path can be walked from the church through three parts of the village to the southernmost farm in Sønderby. It therefore leads beyond the church through several parts of the village to a specifically named destination. If you plan to walk the path, check its conditions before setting out, as they may change.
Sandgades Plantage also serves as a recreational area. This offers different options for your day: the historic church path, with its described route, and an area dedicated to recreation. Together with the buildings and historic land divisions, Store Darum offers several ways to explore the village’s history and landscape.
