Huzová: Church, Local History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Huzová
You can get to know Huzová through two specific themes: the Church of St. Giles, with its architectural and interior history, and the marked hiking trails in the landscape of Sovinecko Nature Park. If you are planning a stay, you can first consider whether the religious architecture and local history or trails through valleys and to hilltop destinations should be the main focus. Huzová is a starting point with bus connections to the marked hiking trails in the nature park. Since bus services can change, check the timetable before your trip.
The Church of St. Giles and historical landmarks
The Church of St. Giles contains a Romanesque core. Inside, the features include ornamental wall paintings, colored stained-glass windows and decorated altars, as well as a Neoclassical pulpit. On the exterior, there is a glazed niche with a biblical scene. The church thus brings together several distinctive details, from its early structure to the design of its interior and façade.
Historical landmarks can also be found outside the church building. A stone cross dating from 1827 stands in front of the church. A statue of St. Joseph from the first quarter of the 19th century is located by the cemetery wall. On the edge of the village stands the Marian Column: this unusually composed sculpture dates from 1710 and was created by a folk artist. Their varied forms and dates give you several specific points of reference as you explore Huzová’s local history.
A document by Bishop Zdík mentions Huzová in 1141 under its original name, Guzoue. Its early history also includes a probable transit function: Huzová was presumably designated as a station on the road from Olomouc to Wrocław from the beginning of settlement. Earlier occupations also shaped the village. Flax growing or processing, and home weaving, were important historical sources of income for the population. Thus, in addition to architectural history, earlier crafts also come into view.
In Huzová, Dolní mlýn is the only surviving one of three mills built one after another. This landmark adds another aspect of the village’s historic character to its church buildings, monuments and local history.
Hiking in Sovinecko Nature Park
Sovinecko Nature Park is characterized by deep valleys and distinctive slopes covered in dense forest. The hiking trails can be easily distinguished by their described routes and destinations. A blue-marked trail leads from Huzová via Pod Líchou and through the Teplička valley to Sovinec Castle; the route description was last updated in 2006, so check it locally before setting out. A trail through the Teplička valley follows the Teplička River and continues via Pod Karlovcem to the small settlement of Pasecký Žleb.
A yellow-marked hiking trail leads east from Huzová to the 706-meter-high summit of Pomezí and continues in the direction of the 800-meter-high summit of Slunečná. The destinations offer a clear comparison: one route focuses on Sovinec Castle and the valley, while another leads to the small settlement of Pasecký Žleb; the yellow marking takes you to Pomezí and in the direction of Slunečná. You can choose your route based on the destinations. Check the route locally once more before setting out.
