Local architectural and cultural history takes center stage in Oplocany. For planning your trip, a Baroque statue of St. Florian, a bell tower in the village square, and the history of the former mill offer different points of interest. There are also early traces of human settlement along the Valová and two watercourses in the southern and southwestern parts of the municipality. These topics help you understand Oplocany’s cultural and historical character.

Watercourses and traces of the past

The Viklička and the Valová flow through the cadastral area of Oplocany; both are in the southern and southwestern parts of the municipality. People were already living along the Valová around 2500 BC. Oplocany was first mentioned in writing in 1131. These dates represent two different perspectives on the past: early settlement belongs to prehistory, while 1131 marks the first written mention. For historical context, the Valová is the more specific reference: early settlement is located along it, while the Viklička also helps orient visitors geographically.

Cultural landmarks and architectural history

The sandstone statue of St. Florian is a Baroque work from the mid-18th century. It is believed to have been created by the Moravian sculptor and stucco artist Gottfried Fritsche from TovaÄŤov. It is listed as a cultural monument and has been restored in recent years. The combination of sandstone, Baroque design, and its presumed creator gives the statue a distinct art-historical character.

Oplocany’s bell tower stands in the village square and was repaired in 2015 with support from the Czech Ministry for Regional Development. The Chapel of St. Ernest in Oplocany was renovated during the 2024–2025 project period with financial support from the Czech Ministry of Agriculture. The dates make it easy to distinguish the two projects: 2015 relates to the bell tower, and 2024–2025 to the chapel.

In the Arnoštov district of Oplocany, there is a chapel in front of house No. 144.

The former mill and local production

The former Oplocanský Mill offers a glimpse of another aspect of the town’s history. A cooperative dairy began operating there on November 15, 1909. After renovations beginning in 1936, Tvarůžky were also produced at the mill. The dates mark different stages: dairy operations began in 1909, and Tvarůžky production was added after renovations from 1936 onward. The former production industry thus adds an economic and food-history perspective to Oplocany, alongside its religious buildings.
