Archaeological Traces and Churches

The Hríb archaeological site in Sokolníky includes a settlement from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages, including the 11th to 12th centuries. Sokolníky is documented in writing from 1113 and is designated as an archaeological site. Here you can encounter both a dated written record and settlement traces from distant eras.

The preserved foundations of the vanished Romanesque Church of St Michael remain. They have an irregular single-nave layout and are registered as a national cultural monument under the number ÚZPF 1523/1. The site beside the field path to State Road 593 is freely accessible to the public and has an information board. Distinct from this is the Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel in the Sokolníky district: it is Baroque-classical, dates from 1758 and was altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is also part of the local heritage. Comparing the two helps distinguish the foundations of the vanished church from the parish church.

Cultural Monuments Compared

Hrádok in Sokolníky is also a medieval national cultural monument (ÚZPF 1524/1). The Kúria Kochanovských manor complex is a classical national cultural monument from the beginning of the 18th century and has an L-shaped layout. Villa Katscherovcov, with its garden, dates from the beginning of the 20th century; it is a historicist national cultural monument and is also L-shaped. Their shared layout provides a concrete basis for comparing the two ensembles, while their dates and styles differ.

The statue of St Florian with its pedestal is a national cultural monument from 1653 in the folk Baroque style. The local heritage of Sokolníky also includes a statue of St Joseph with relics of saints dating from the mid-18th century, and a cross erected in 1918 to commemorate the end of the First World War. Their different dates and forms give each monument its own historical context.

Nature at Malý Bahorec

Malý Bahorec lies in the cadastral area of Sokolníky and is designated as a Site of European Importance under code SKUEV0877. The protected area covers 6.00 hectares. Within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, Malý Bahorec is home to one of the largest populations, by number of individuals, of the green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio). The stated area refers to the protected site; the plant population is considered in the context of the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. Reasons given for a proposal to protect the site include dry-loving grass and perennial plant communities of European importance, as well as sub-Pannonian grasslands on calcareous substrate.

Trails and Orientation

In the municipality of Podhorany, a junction for blue- and yellow-marked trails is located beneath the 88.9-metre-long railway viaduct. The blue-marked trail towards Štitáre is called “Zarneckého chodník”. Signposts also point to the Hôrka viewpoint and the Horná studňa spring. This distinguishes a named route from two signposted destinations. Before setting out on a hike, it is advisable to check the current condition of the trails.

There is a regional bus terminus in the municipality. If you plan to take the bus for your journey, check the timetable for your travel date.
