Rišňovce: Churches, Manor House and Local History
Accommodation in Rišňovce
Rišňovce lies in the southwestern part of the Nitra Loess Hills. If you would like to include cultural history in your travel plans, you’ll find topics from different periods here: from traces of archaeological settlement to buildings and memorial sites.
Archaeological Traces and the Church of the Holy Trinity
Archaeological sites in the municipality provide evidence of settlement during the Neolithic and Hallstatt periods. Pottery fragments are among the finds from Roman times. Together, these offer several chronological reference points for local history and different types of archaeological traces.
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built between 1766 and 1775. It is a late Baroque single-nave building with a square presbytery and an adjoining sacristy. Its interior combines Baroque and Rococo design. One notable detail is the Louisian-style high altar, dating from the second half of the 18th century.
Individual historic furnishings also have their own stories: a small bell of Saints Cyril and Methodius, dating from 1747, was discovered by chance in the attic of the parish house. The church tower, including the cross at its top, is about 27 metres high. The choir loft is reached not from inside the church, but by climbing steep steps outside near the tower.
The Manor House and Kutuzov’s Stay
The earliest construction phase of the manor house probably dates to the mid-16th century. At that time, the building consisted of a single-storey, three-room, single-wing structure with a cellar. The manor house has been listed in the central register as a national cultural monument since 2 July 1993.
The Renaissance manor house is also associated with a precisely dated historic stay: Marshal Kutuzov spent the night there from 18 to 19 December 1805, after the Battle of Slavkov on 2 December 1805. The house’s construction history and Kutuzov’s stay offer two different ways to explore local history: the development of a building and a dated event.
Museum Visits by Appointment Only
The M. I. Kutuzov Museum features a permanent exhibition with copies of historic documents relating to the history of Rišňovce and Kutuzov’s stay in the village. The lower rooms also house a permanent exhibition of folk-culture objects. Visits are possible by telephone appointment only; arrange your visit by phone before travelling.
Memorial Sites and the Stations of the Cross
South of the Church of the Holy Trinity, a double cross dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius stands in a well-kept park. Another memorial site is the monument to the fallen. Firefighters from the Czechoslovak voluntary fire brigade erected it in 1935 with the support of local residents. It honours the people of Rišňovce who fell in the First World War (1914–1918).
Created in 2024, the Stations of the Cross consists of fourteen stations made of acacia wood. It is regarded as a place for personal prayer, relaxation and renewal. The stations also serve as a reminder to passers-by on their way to the cemetery in Horné Rišňovce. In this way, the Stations of the Cross combine a religious purpose with a commemorative function, without conflating the two meanings.
