Rúbaň: Castle, Park and Wine Tasting
Accommodation in Rúbaň
Rúbaň offers a variety of starting points for planning a trip: the history of its castle and sacred art, a large landscape park, and wine-related experiences. If you are looking for a hotel, these interests can shape your stay. It is worth considering historic buildings and art, nature, and current visitor offerings separately.
Castle History and Art in St. Imrich Church
Rúbaň Castle was probably built in the second half of the 18th century in the Neoclassical style by the Horváthy family of Disznós. In 1830, the Jankovich family remodelled the castle. It was not originally intended as a prestigious winery, but rather as a comfortable summer residence for wealthy families. This historical context distinguishes the castle from today’s wine offerings in Rúbaň.
Construction of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Imrich began in 1908 on the foundations of an earlier church. The artworks inside include a secco painting of the miraculous multiplication of the loaves on the barrel vault, and illusionistic secco and wall paintings above the choir. The painting of the multiplication of the loaves was created in 1967 by amateur painter Štefan Petica; the depictions of Saints Stephen and Imrich date from 1979 and are by Pavol Miskolczy. The church also preserves a polychrome Baroque Pietà from the 18th century. It was brought here from Šaštín in the 19th century. The different dates give each artwork its own historical context.
The history of the municipality’s area goes back even further: a Slavic-Avar skeletal burial ground dating from the 8th century was discovered there. There was probably an earlier settlement in this area.
Landscape Park and Willow Grove
A 54.77-hectare nature and landscape park has been preserved beside the castle. The Steiger family laid it out around 1887. Twelve species of protected exotic woody plants still grow in the park. Both the size of the grounds and their botanical collection are distinctive features of the local landscape.
A different kind of landscape can be found on the boundary between Rúbaň and Strekov: a willow grove with several romantic spots has been preserved by a pond. The grove and the park represent different natural settings—here, the pond and willows; there, the large park beside the castle.
Wine and Visitor Offerings
Château Rúbaň combines modern winemaking technologies with traditional methods; the grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. An ampelographic collection focuses on the characteristics, history and current status of individual grape varieties. Visitors can taste grapes and wine made from grapes in the collection. Château Rúbaň also offers wine tastings featuring wines that reflect the region’s distinctive qualities. Check the arrangements for visits and tastings before your trip. Private parking is available directly on the premises.
The collection was established in memory of a history spanning more than 250 years. Together with the winemaking methods described, it offers insight into different aspects of wine: the characteristics of individual grape varieties, working with the grapes, and tasting. The collection and the regionally inspired wine tastings are separate offerings. If you are particularly interested in grape varieties, the collection offers a more specific focus.
Exhibition and Local Events
The fire station in Rúbaň houses a permanent exhibition about the municipality’s past and present, as well as its local volunteer fire brigade. Visitors should arrange their visit in advance with the municipal office. During the office’s opening hours, visitors can also obtain a commemorative stamp for hiking and travel diaries, notebooks, postcards of Rúbaň and similar souvenirs. Check the office’s opening hours in advance.
At Dni obce Rúbaň 2025, the programme took place in the cultural centre and continued the following day at the sports ground. The event was held on 4 and 5 July 2025. On 4 July, a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, which had been installed in Rúbaň in 2025, was consecrated during the event. This information refers to the 2025 edition.
