Tvrdošovce offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: its thermal baths and local history told through church art, archaeological finds, and memorial sites. If you are looking for a hotel, you can consider whether thermal waters or cultural attractions are more important for your stay. The details below can help you get a sense of the town based on your specific interests.

Thermal Waters as a Reason to Visit

The thermal baths in Tvrdošovce have pools with pleasantly warm thermal water at 30 °C. They are located at Nová cesta 1. The temperature is a specific point of reference for travelers who want to take thermal waters into account when choosing where to stay.

Church and Art from Different Periods

The Church of St. Stephen acquired its present single-nave form with a side altar during a renovation between 1707 and 1725. Its interior is decorated with frescoes by Master Jakobey, dating from 1881. The two dates relate to different parts of the church’s history: the period from 1707 to 1725 refers to the renovation, while 1881 is the year of the frescoes. Visitors interested in architectural history can consider the building’s development separately from its later artistic decoration.

Museum and Archaeological Traces

The municipal museum on Dolná Street is devoted to the history and traditions of Tvrdošovce. It was established at the beginning of the 21st century. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the current opening hours in advance.

Archaeological finds indicate that Tvrdošovce has been inhabited since the Early Bronze Age. There are also traces of human life from the Early and Late Roman Imperial periods. These findings are from distinctly different periods: the Early Bronze Age finds date further back, while the Roman traces represent two additional historical periods. Together, they offer insight into the town’s long past, distinct from its later buildings and works of art.

Rákóczi Site and Local Remembrance

The Rákóczi Monument stands by the new cemetery. It was completely redesigned in 2005 and has been adorned with four carved reliefs ever since. From this site, Count M. Bercsényi sent three important letters to F. Rákóczi II on October 30, 1704. A bloody battle between the Kuruc and the Imperial Army also took place on the so-called Rákóczi Hill. The letters and the battle are distinct historical connections to this place.

Another memorial commemorates three people from Tvrdošovce who died in the 1848/49 Revolution and War of Independence. The municipality erected a memorial column for them in 2002. This commemoration of the 19th century adds another chapter in local history to the events of 1704.

Festivities and Getting There

The Dni Svätého Štefana festivities took place for the 27th time in 2026, from August 20 to 24. As part of that year’s program, a cooking competition was held on August 22 in the park on Horna Street. These dates refer to the 2026 edition; if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the edition you wish to attend.
