Beaulon lies on the edge of the Loire. Several distinct themes can help you plan your trip: the Sologne bourbonnaise Natura 2000 site, buildings with their own architectural history, routes with specified distances, and the seasonal Les Étals de Beaulon market. Keep specific dates and visiting conditions in mind, as access to the Château de Beaulon is expressly restricted.

Landscape on the Edge of the Loire

Beaulon is one of the municipalities in the Allier department included in the Sologne bourbonnaise Natura 2000 site. The site covers 22,237 hectares and is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Birds Directive. The two geographical reference points provide different perspectives: its location on the edge of the Loire describes Beaulon’s position, while its Natura 2000 status places the municipality within a large protected area. If you are planning your trip around landscapes, this provides a concrete point of reference without equating individual routes with the protected area.

Heritage and Architectural Styles

The Château de Beaulon is listed in France’s supplementary inventory of historic monuments; its unusual architecture is described as the Charles X style. Access is important when planning a visit: as of August 2026, the park and château are closed to the public and cannot be visited. Check the access situation again before your trip.

The Grange de Raclat is the last surviving remnant of a complete agricultural holding. The barn is built with a timber frame and earth infill: the timber forms the framework, and the spaces between are filled with earth. Some of the timber elements may date from the 18th century. A listing order dated 7 April 2008 protects the Grange in its entirety, including interior features such as feed troughs and hay racks. Its construction, cautiously dated timber elements and comprehensive protection give the Grange an architectural profile distinct from that of the château.

The Church of Saint-Privat is a Neo-Gothic brick-and-stone church. It was built in 1878 to plans by the architect J.-B. Moreau of Moulins. Its features include side aisles, four chapels and a projecting transept. Inside are wooden statues and the fresco “Incarnation,” created by Denys de Solère in 2011. Saint-Privat can therefore be understood in terms of both its construction date and materials, as well as specific features of its interior.

Routes and Seasonal Market

The Balade champêtre autour de Beaulon is a very easy 22 km road cycling route. The estimated duration is around 1 hour and 45 minutes; the starting point is at 6 Place de la Mairie in Beaulon. Check local route conditions before setting out. The Circuit des Quarts starts below the church on the River Engièvre and leads to the Clos du May lock on the Loire lateral canal, where it joins the towpath. The Circuit des Quarts can be combined with the Circuit de Mont to make a 22.5 km loop. Be sure to take local conditions into account for this route as well.

Les Étals de Beaulon takes place seasonally from May to September, once a month on the first Friday, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The venues are Place de la Mairie and the area behind the town hall. The schedule may change; check the date before your visit. The market brings together local producers and craftspeople. Food is available on site, along with a fire pit, tables and chairs. The program and facilities may change, so it is advisable to confirm the details for your chosen date.
