Chantelle: Discover Nature Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Chantelle
Chantelle brings together the Gorges de la Bouble, trails through the countryside and cultural visits in the town. The gorges extend across the communes of Chantelle and Deneuille-les-Chantelle and open out into the alluvial plain of the Sioule after four kilometres. This landscape includes flowing watercourses and damp seepage areas, riverside and hillside forests, as well as scree slopes and areas of scrub. This offers several options for planning your trip: a hiking route, a walk through the landscape or a visit to cultural sites.
Gorges de la Bouble: Landscape and Trails
The Promenade Anne de Beaujeu is a four-kilometre walking trail marked in yellow; the route is listed as taking 90 minutes. It starts at the car park in front of the Abbaye de Chantelle; the town hall in Deneuille-les-Chantelle is another starting point. The “Les passerelles” trail also runs through the Gorges de la Bouble area. It is 5.5 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 160 metres. The routes offer different points of reference when choosing: the Promenade has a stated duration and trail marking, while the details highlighted for “Les passerelles” are its distance and elevation gain. Before setting out, check trail conditions, markings and local parking arrangements.
The “Pépit de Chantelle” treasure hunt trail leads through the Gorges de la Bouble. Participants solve Bianca’s riddles to win the treasure. On a walk through the gorges, you can also see the restored Moulin des Pierres. If you are visiting specifically to see the mill, check its restoration status again beforehand. For app-based visits, it is advisable to check technical availability in advance; local visitor regulations may also change.
Abbey and Culture in Chantelle
The Abbaye Saint-Vincent cannot be visited in its entirety. During opening hours, only the courtyard, church and sisters’ shop are accessible. Guided tours showcase the church’s Romanesque architecture and its apse. Check opening hours and tour times before your trip.
Self-guided visits in Chantelle are available year-round with a tourist map or via the Wivisite app. At the Maison du Tourisme, you can also see a large-scale model showing the Château de Chantelle in the 15th century. You can use the map or app for this kind of visit; if using the app, it is worth checking availability in advance.
In the historic Cul de Sac district, artisans, second-hand dealers, antique dealers, shopkeepers and gallery owners welcome visitors to their shops. This makes Chantelle a cultural destination beyond the abbey, with a focus on local shops and their owners.
The cultural offerings have different highlights. A guided tour of the Abbaye Saint-Vincent focuses on Romanesque church architecture and the apse; in Cul de Sac, you can visit shops run by local businesses. You can therefore shape your stay around architecture or a stroll through shops and galleries.
