Condat is part of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne. You can plan your visit around several specific highlights: marked trails and walks, museums, guided tours and regional produce. You can first decide whether you’d like to get to know Condat mainly through the outdoors, its history and exhibitions, or its cheese-making tradition. These activities come in different formats: a circular hike is not the same as a forest walk or a museum exhibition.

Hiking and landscapes

La Grange Rouge is a marked 4 km circular trail with lovely views of Condat’s town centre. The trail length gives you a clear reference point for planning your route, while the town view offers a distinctive landscape highlight. The Parc forestier du Poulainville, by contrast, focuses on the tree species found there: educational and playful features invite you to discover them on a walk of around 45 minutes. The comparison is practical: at La Grange Rouge, you know the length of the loop; at the forest park, you know the approximate duration of the walk.

Le bois du Lac also combines exercise with a glimpse into Condat’s history. The walking trail follows this historical theme on a loop around Lac des Moines. One alternative route takes you on a detour of around 120 m to a striking volcanic rock pinnacle. This trail lets you choose between the historical connection to the town and an alternative route with an additional viewpoint.

Museums and history

The Musée Servaire presents five billion years of history. The exhibition ranges from the unusual forms of the Burgess Shale to dinosaurs and the mammoth, and on to modern humans. This sequence brings its broad thematic scope to life: the exhibition covers several stages in the history of the Earth and humankind. If you’re sorting cultural attractions by subject, this is where the vast sweep of time takes centre stage.

The Espace Albert Monier is a small museum dedicated to photographer Albert Monier. It displays posters, postcards and original works. In contrast to the broad sweep of Earth’s history at the Musée Servaire, the focus here is on photography and its different forms of presentation. The two museums therefore differ above all in their subject matter: one takes a wide-ranging historical perspective, while the other is dedicated to a photographer.

Cheese, regional produce and guided tours

The Société Fromagère de Condat invites you to discover traditional ageing cellars and taste Saint-Nectaire AOP and other AOP cheeses from the Auvergne. Both the cellars and the tastings are culinary highlights you can include in your travel plans.

Les Jardins du Vernet produces and sells organic vegetables, herbs, and vegetable and herb seedlings directly from the farm and at the nearest markets around Condat. This offers a different focus from the cheese cellars: here, vegetables, herbs and seedlings take centre stage; there, ageing and tasting. You can discover regional produce from different perspectives without confusing these distinct offerings.

RM Tourisme offers classic and theatrical guided tours in Condat on request. Elsewhere in Cantal, the provider also offers storytelling and legends evenings, conferences, activities, treasure hunts and leathercraft workshops. For planning purposes, the distinction in scope matters: the guided tours are specifically offered in Condat, while the other activities are described as being available across Cantal.
