Nature at Étang d’Herculat, moped history in Herculat and church art in Église Saint-Julien offer different points of focus for a stay in Treignat. Depending on your interests, you can turn your attention to aquatic plants and water birds, a mode of transport with a history of its own, or religious paintings.

Nature at Étang d’Herculat

Étang d’Herculat is a very old reservoir that once belonged to the lords of Villebouche. Its vegetation includes emergent, floating and submerged plants, including reeds, pondweeds, hornwort and water milfoil. The three terms distinguish plants by their position in relation to the water: emergent plants rise above the water’s surface, floating plants lie on it, and submerged plants grow beneath it. The examples therefore show not only different species, but also different growth forms in the water.

The pond is designated as a protected area for water birds, and many species can be observed there. Together with the different plant groups, this creates a nature theme with two distinct points of focus: you can look at the vegetation’s growth forms or focus on the birdlife.

Walk and water filtration

The Circuit du plan d’eau d’Herculat is an easy walking route of about 13 km, taking approximately two hours. The distance and duration are approximate and may be revised. For planning purposes, the information distinguishes between route length and time required: the distance indicates the scope of the walk, while about two hours gives a rough timeframe. Check the route information in advance if your day’s plans depend on it.

At the Baignade biologique d’Herculat, water is filtered using a natural system of aquatic plants, sand and gravel. Unlike the Circuit, where distance and duration are the main considerations, filtration is a distinct feature here. Aquatic plants appear in two contexts: as part of the vegetation at the Étang and as a component of the Baignade’s natural filtration system.

Moped history and church art

The Musée de la Mob – Le Garage à Tasses in Herculat exhibits French and foreign mopeds. Since 2003, the museum has traced the history of the moped as a popular means of transport. This historical perspective goes beyond individual models and places them in the context of the moped’s role in transport. Le Garage à Tasses also organizes moped rides using the museum’s vehicles. The exhibition and rides appeal to different interests: historical context and an activity featuring the museum’s vehicles. If you would like to plan a ride, check the dates in advance.

The church site in Treignat comprises Église Saint Julien and the Saint Gervais bell tower. The choir of Église Saint-Julien is decorated with 18th-century paintings depicting the life and death of Christ. A stone lion stands at the entrance. This distinguishes the named structures from the specific features of Église Saint-Julien: the church and bell tower are part of the site, while the paintings and lion belong to individual areas of the church.
