Vallon-En-Sully: Heritage on the Canal de Berry
Accommodation in Vallon-En-Sully
Vallon-En-Sully offers several distinct ways to explore history and landscape: Château de Peufeilhoux, the Romanesque Église Saint-Blaise, a museum with animated models, and the Canal de Berry. There are also walking and cycling routes. When planning your stay, you can choose between architecture, depictions of everyday scenes, and canal scenery; the sights and routes differ in their themes and scale.
Castle, church and architectural history
Château de Peufeilhoux was fully listed as a historic monument under a protection order dated 4 January 2021. The protection also covers the double enclosure, the gateways and the outbuildings. Visitor attractions include twelve furnished rooms, a rose garden, themed gardens and the Museum of Wonders. Opening arrangements may vary; check them before your visit.
The Église Saint-Blaise offers a different perspective on architectural history. It is a Romanesque church built on a motte in the 12th century. A free visit is self-guided and supported by an information board. Three naves, a non-projecting transept, an apse and semicircular apsidioles describe its architecture. The stone spire dates from the 14th century. Here, you can encounter features from different periods of construction.
Everyday scenes in miniature
At the Musée des maquettes animées in Vallon-en-Sully, a collection features twelve animated models at a scale of 1:8. They depict traditional occupations in everyday scenes. Unlike the focus on the architectural forms of the castle and church, attention here is directed to activities and how they are represented in miniature. The museum thus complements the history of the town with vivid scenes of working life.
On the Canal de Berry: boat, walking path and cycling route
Mini-cruises on the Canal de Berry depart from Allée des Soupirs on an electric boat for five people. The trip offers the chance to discover the canal’s fauna and flora. The landing stage is a 500-metre walk from the railway station. Seasonal operating details may change; check them in advance if you plan to take a trip. An environmental artwork can also be discovered on Allée des Soupirs as part of the local walking route. Its presentation may change.
The Coeur de France à vélo route also runs along Allée des Soupirs, between the Cher River and the Canal de Berry. From Vallon-en-Sully, it follows mostly the left bank of the Canal de Berry to Montluçon. The route is about 20 kilometres long. As infrastructure conditions may change, it is advisable to check current route conditions before setting off. For a longer connection, the GR® 303 Terre des Bourbons runs for 182 kilometres from the GR® 41 at Vallon-en-Sully to the GR® 3 at Montcombroux-les-Mines. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length and in the long-distance walking or cycling routes they connect to.
The work of the Association pour la Valorisation du Patrimoine Fluvial (AVPF) is also part of the region’s river heritage. It is dedicated to restoring and promoting the barge and the heritage of the Canal de Berry, particularly in Vallon-en-Sully. Together with the mini-cruise and the paths alongside the canal, this offers a distinctive way to explore the town’s river history.
