Discover Vichy as a spa town and cultural heritage destination
Accommodation in Vichy
Vichy combines spa town history, distinctive architecture and green spaces with opportunities for activities by the water. The city is one of eleven spa towns that make up the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Great Spa Towns of Europe”. During your stay, you can choose between cultural heritage, parks and activities around Lac d’Allier, depending on what interests you most.
Spa town history at Parc des Sources
In the city centre is the six-hectare Parc des Sources, a cultural heritage site. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1994. The park makes the connection between urban green space and thermal history visible. The Hall des Sources was built in 1903 at the outlet of the Chomel and Grande Grille springs. It is freely accessible and offers free tastings of water from the Célestins spring. As access information may change, check it before travelling.
The Grand établissement thermal was also inaugurated in 1903. Its inauguration is another historical point of reference for Vichy’s thermal architecture. Together with the Hall des Sources, it is among the buildings that shape the character of the spa town.
Buildings and church architecture
The Opéra de Vichy makes its own architectural statement: its metal structure is built without columns, and its decoration is in the Art Nouveau style. The Opéra hosts performances throughout the year; check the programme for your travel dates.
The Saint-Blaise–Notre-Dame-des-Malades church complex brings together two periods of construction. The older Saint-Blaise church, built in 1714, was joined by the new Notre-Dame-des-Malades church, built in 1931. The complex—not just the newer church—is one of the notable examples of religious Art Deco architecture. The two dates make the time between the construction phases clear.
Parks and seasonal events
Parc Napoléon III reveals another side of the city. Its winding paths curve around broad lawns. Today, the park is home to just over 800 trees and a collection of tree species from every continent. The layout of its paths and lawns and its diverse tree collection are distinct features of the park.
During the warmer months, the Kiosque à musique de la source de l’Hôpital hosts numerous events during the day and in the evening. The programme is seasonal; check the dates for your travel period if you are planning a visit around an event.
Routes along Lac d’Allier
The Via Allier reaches Vichy from the north and continues along the developed promenade beside Lac d’Allier. Around Vichy, the route offers 27 kilometres of paths between Billy and Saint-Yorre, reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. If you are planning a walk or bike ride, this restriction can help you choose the right activity. As route infrastructure may change, check local conditions before travelling.
The Circuit Autour du Lac can be used for walking, jogging, inline skating, cycling or riding a Rosalie. These activities differ from those allowed on the Via Allier paths, which are reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists: jogging, inline skating and riding a Rosalie are also possible on the Circuit. Both routes offer different options if you want to include some exercise in your trip.
