Arches offers a focus on cultural history and a specific hiking option: the chapel at the Couvent de la Thébaïde and the Church of Saint-Julien are complemented by the Le rocher de Chabane circular trail. The Pont suspendu de Saint-Projet also tells its own part of the town’s story. Which of these themes takes priority during your stay depends on whether you are more interested in art, architectural history or getting outdoors.

Architecture at the Couvent de la Thébaïde

The chapel at the Couvent de la Thébaïde has ten regionalist stained-glass windows. They were created in 1894 by Rouen glass artist Jules Boulanger. The windows can therefore be identified by both artist and year of creation; at La Vrillette, the focus is on materials and design concept. This structure at the Couvent is made of steam-bent wood and inspired by Renaissance loggias. Different design approaches thus come together: stained glass in the chapel and a wooden structure with a historical architectural reference. The Couvent is located in a large forest above the Dordogne gorges. A 500-metre footpath leads to the site. If you include the Couvent in your plans, allow for this footpath as a separate section of your visit.

Church of Saint-Julien, music and festival

The 12th-century keep serves as the bell tower of the neo-Gothic Church of Saint-Julien. Arches has maintained a partnership with the Festival Millesources for more than 20 years; as part of this collaboration, concerts have been held in the church. The traditional Fête de Saint-Julien also takes place every year. The festival includes, among other things, a méchoui, fireworks and musical events; visitors are welcome to attend. Check the specific dates before travelling. This gives you both a long-standing connection to music and an annual festival to consider when planning your trip, with exact dates to keep in mind.

Le rocher de Chabane: circular trail and optional route

The Le rocher de Chabane hiking trail is an easy, marked, five-kilometre circular route starting in Arches. It leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Dordogne Valley. An optional route descends to the Dordogne near Lanau and adds 1 hour and 15 minutes to the walking time. This is the additional walking time for the optional route, not the total duration of the circular trail. When comparing the options, you can choose between a clearly defined circular route and an additional descent with a specified increase in walking time. This makes it easier to fit the hike into your day according to how much walking you want to do.

The history of the Pont suspendu de Saint-Projet

The Pont suspendu de Saint-Projet connects the départements of Cantal and Corrèze. An important date in its history is its opening to traffic in 1945, after the reservoir of the Barrage de l’Aigle was flooded. The bridge can therefore be viewed both as a connection between two départements and in the context of this historic turning point. Together with the keep and the church, it adds another distinct perspective to Arches’ architectural history.

Practical planning tips

When planning your time, treat festival dates and hiking time differently: the FĂŞte de Saint-Julien takes place every year, but you should check the specific dates; for the hike, the stated 1 hour and 15 minutes is additional walking time for the optional route. Parking is available at the Church of Saint-Julien. Check access details before your visit, as they may change.
