Besse combines a clearly laid-out village with two different types of route. Town houses, the church and the linden tree on the village square are distinctive local landmarks; the upper part of the village also offers views and a named landmark. The PR-Besse hiking loop and the “Entre Doire et Bertrande” car and motorcycle circuit differ both in length and in how you travel.

Village Character and Views

The commune of Besse consists of two distinct parts. The centre features town houses dating from the 19th century. Besse is also home to the small Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame de la Visitation; its architectural features include a wall bell tower with two bell openings. This identifies both a style and a specific architectural feature of the church. On the village square, opposite the church, stands the linden tree known as the Tilleul de Sully. The church and linden tree face each other, giving the square a clear spatial relationship between these two landmarks. Together with the town houses, they provide a range of architectural and local points of interest in Besse.

The upper part of the village offers views of the Monts du Cantal and across the Bertrande Valley. Walkers can also see the Croix du Ciel there. This part of the village therefore combines expansive landscape views with a single named landmark: the view takes in the mountains and valley, while the Croix du Ciel remains a specific point of reference in the area. This distinguishes the landscape perspective from the architectural and square features in the centre.

Hike and Circuit

The PR-Besse hiking loop starts in the square by the church and then returns to Besse. It is 7 km long and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The loop is considered easy, though it includes several rocky sections. These details complement each other: the difficulty rating describes the loop as a whole, while the rocky stretches refer to individual sections. The starting point, return to Besse, distance and approximate duration give you several key details for planning. The route starts in the square, where the linden tree known as the Tilleul de Sully also stands opposite the church.

The 90-kilometre “Entre Doire et Bertrande” car and motorcycle circuit is on a different scale. It follows the D342 towards Besse. A viewpoint on the plateau looks out over the Monts du Cantal. The PR-Besse loop is a 7 km hiking option that takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, while the car and motorcycle circuit is 90 km long. The comparison highlights how the two routes differ mainly in mode of transport and scale.
