Chaudes-Aigues is shaped by hot springs, geothermal history, architectural heritage and hiking trails. The Source du Par reaches 82 °C and is considered Europe’s hottest naturally occurring spring.

Thermal water and Caleden

The Source du Par is located in a lane above Place du Marché and supplies the Caleden thermal centre with 300 litres per minute. It is both a distinctive natural landmark and connected to the thermal centre. Caleden’s thermal leisure area includes an indoor pool, a thermal lagoon, counter-current swimming, a large whirlpool, underwater jets, a cold-water pool, bubble baths, geysers, waterfalls, a sauna and a hammam. The spa offers massages as well as body and facial treatments.

Visitors interested in the town’s thermal heritage can also explore its history beyond the bathing facilities. At Géothermia, the exhibition presents the history of Chaudes-Aigues’ thermal springs and their beneficial properties. Aboard the Nautile, an immersive presentation depicts black smokers and the unusual wildlife surrounding them. This brings together the history of warm water and a natural-history perspective on geothermal phenomena.

Buildings and traces of local history

The hot-water washhouse is fed by the 62 °C Lestende spring. Two successive basins allow the water to cool gradually. Renovated in 1999, the building recalls how water was once used to treat wool. Here, its practical function and historic use are both tangible.

The churches also show how Chaudes-Aigues’ distinctive features are woven into its heritage. The Église Saint-Martin Saint-Blaise is heated using geothermal energy. Its furnishings include carved wooden choir stalls from the 16th century, which are listed as historic monuments. The Chapelle des Pénitents houses a restored 17th-century altarpiece in the Spanish Baroque style. The chapel is also used as an exhibition venue seasonally; take this seasonal use into account when planning your visit.

Religious imagery is not limited to church buildings: in every neighbourhood, a statue of the local patron saint stands in a glazed niche on the wall of a house. These small displays dotted around the town complement the larger buildings with a glimpse of everyday life.

Hike to Château du Couffour

Le Couffour is an easy 1.5-kilometre circular hike in Chaudes-Aigues. It leads to Château du Couffour and offers a viewpoint overlooking Chaudes-Aigues and the Remontalou valley. The keep visible today and the residential building now used as a farmhouse are remnants of the fortress built in the 14th century, once flanked by seven towers.

The circular route “Chaudes-Aigues, de Par en Par” offers a different focus: it follows 14 stops exploring the history of water and local attractions. The two routes therefore have different characters: Le Couffour focuses on the loop, the château and the views, while the de Par en Par route focuses on stops related to the history of water. Trail conditions may vary; check local conditions before setting out.
