Freix-Anglards offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: the Croix de Sarrus and the Four Ă  Pain de Beynaguet are part of the local heritage; historic architecture and restored houses shape the townscape; and views of the Monts du Cantal open up at the northern edge of the village. The 7 km PR La Croix Haute hiking trail and the Bordes picnic area add hiking and a municipal recreational facility to the mix. This gives you clear places and conditions to consider when weighing up different interests.

Historic crosses and local heritage

The historic Croix de Sarrus dates from 1642 and is made of basalt. It is located where the villages of Sarrus, Bassignac and Vernuéjouls meet. A new Croix de Sarrus was installed in Sarrus on 6 October 2018; it is the work of sculptor Robert Salat in collaboration with Jean-Claude Carlat. The dates are easy to distinguish: 1642 refers to the historic cross, while 2018 marks the installation of the new work. The location at the meeting point of the three villages and the dates offer different points of reference: one indicates the location, the other the historical context.

Freix-Anglards’ local heritage also includes the Four à Pain de Beynaguet. Alongside the cross, the bread oven is another distinct part of the local heritage. Those interested in the history of the area can take in both a dated monument and another named heritage site.

Townscape and views

Historic architecture and restored houses shape Freix-Anglards. This describes the town’s built character, while the dated cross is a clearly defined record of local history. At the northern edge of the village, there are impressive views of the Monts du Cantal. The townscape and mountain views therefore appeal to two different interests: architectural details and scenery.

Planning a hike and picnic

The PR La Croix Haute hiking trail in Freix-Anglards is 7 km long. The route includes crossing a stream at a ford; the trail is only passable in dry weather. Both details matter when planning: the length indicates the extent of the route, while the dry-weather requirement limits when it can be walked. This condition applies to the entire trail, not just the stream crossing. Before setting out, check that conditions are dry and take the ford into account when making your decision.

The Bordes picnic area is a municipal facility established by the commune of Freix-Anglards. It is open daily throughout the year and offers a place for a picnic alongside opportunities to explore history and go hiking. Check the opening information before your visit, as facility conditions can change.
