Gourdièges combines a rich history of church architecture with a walk through the village and a longer cycling route. There are different options to consider when planning your trip: Romanesque and Gothic architecture, a trail to the bread oven and up to the church, and a cycling tour planned for a specific season and subject to weather conditions. The village architecture has also retained its rural character.

Church and Local History

The church in Gourdièges is Gothic and dates from the 15th century; its features include a traditional bell-cot. At the same time, the choir of the Église Saint-Men preserves Romanesque masonry up to the level of the buttresses. The windows on the south side also display Romanesque typology. The church thus brings together its Gothic classification and specific Romanesque architectural features. A bell-cot is a raised wall with openings for bells rather than an enclosed tower. Its comb-like top gives this type of church its name; the bells form part of the church’s silhouette rather than being housed in an enclosed tower.

Saint Men is considered a healing saint and is venerated in Gourdièges. A Gothic stone sculpture in Gourdièges depicts the same head four times as a quadrifrons: with four foreheads, four noses, four mouths and three eyes. These religious and artistic themes add further facets of local history to the architectural story.

Hiking between Architecture and Views

The “Voie Romaine – Chabridet” hike passes the bread oven in Gourdièges and then climbs uphill to the church. The oven has a barrel-vaulted shape and a slate roof. The route therefore passes a tangible example of the village’s architecture before climbing to the church. As the hiking route leaves Gourdièges, it offers views of the Plomb du Cantal and the Puy du Rocher, after passing the church. The route thus combines a section through the village with a climb and subsequent views of the landscape. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Cycling with Seasonal and Weather Conditions

The “La vallée de Brezons” cycling route passes through Gourdièges and is 70 kilometres long. It carries the “Espace Cyclosport” label from the Fédération française de cyclisme (FFC). The route is scheduled to be open from 1 April to 31 October, subject to favourable weather conditions. Check the seasonal information and weather before setting off.

The two activities offer different ways to plan your day: the hike focuses on the sequence of the bread oven, church and views, while the cycling route is defined by its 70-kilometre distance, seasonal window and weather conditions. Gourdièges can therefore be explored either through its local architecture and hiking route or as a stop on a longer cycling tour.
