Le Falgoux: Hiking, Waterfalls and Heritage
Accommodation in Le Falgoux
Le Falgoux is a destination for days spent on hiking trails in the Mars Valley, visiting a waterfall in the forest and exploring cultural sites in the village. If you’re looking for a hotel in Le Falgoux, you can first consider whether your trip will focus more on longer hikes, the route to Cascade du Biaguin, a bike ride or a visit to the village centre. Excursions differ in length, stated duration and starting point—useful details for planning your trip.
Hiking trails with different starting points
The GR®-400 loop through the Cirque du Falgoux starts and ends in Le Falgoux. Another option is the Sentier du Roc du Merle: it is 9.8 kilometres long, listed as taking four hours, and starts at the church square. From the trail, you can reach the summit of Roc du Merle at 1,344 metres. This route therefore combines a specific distance and time with a summit destination.
The route to Cascade du Biaguin is listed as four kilometres and approximately two hours. It starts in the hamlet of La Chaze and is marked in blue. Compared with the Roc du Merle route, both the stated distance and duration are shorter; these details help you compare the time required for the two hikes. La Baladie, by contrast, starts in Tahoul and leads to a ridge after about two kilometres, with panoramic views over the Mars Valley. This route is weather-dependent. The trail through the Mars Valley also has a clearly specified starting point: it begins at the Maison de Site du Falgoux.
The Mars Valley and Cascade du Biaguin
The Mars River rises in the glacial cirque of Le Falgoux. Beech and fir forests cover the valley slopes, and their flora and fauna are described as very rich. This landscape provides a backdrop for a range of nature experiences in the village and valley, although not all trails have the same starting point or length.
Biaguin is a triple waterfall in the forest of Le Falgoux. The upper waterfall is easily accessible from the D12 between Le Falgoux and Pont des Eaux and is protected by a guardrail. The lower section is more difficult to reach. The Biaguin mini-canyon, meanwhile, comprises four waterfalls and is located in the commune of Le Falgoux. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between these details: they describe different areas and do not refer to the same access point.
Cycling and winter activities
There is also an e-bike route through Le Falgoux: the Cœur de Volcan runs from Col d'Aulac via a steep descent to Le Falgoux, then follows the D12 towards Pas de Peyrol. If you’re interested in this route, you can take its course and the places mentioned into account when planning your trip.
In winter, Le Falgoux resort offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding, weather permitting. These activities are therefore subject to a specific condition. Checking snow conditions before planning is a useful addition to this seasonal selection.
Church, Maison de Site and memorial
Saint-Germain Church, built in 1904, stands in the village centre. Its carved wooden furnishings include choir stalls, a pulpit and a baptismal font. The Maison de Site du Falgoux offers free admission, tourist information, events, a shop and an exhibition area. The village thus has both a cultural attraction and a visitor service offering information and exhibitions.
Another place to visit is the Le Falgoux war memorial, with its cobbled paving, known as a calade. It was inaugurated on 16 September 1923 and listed as a historic monument by decree dated 13 March 2019. Two plaques bear the names of the commune’s war dead. The church, Maison de Site and memorial each offer something different: religious furnishings, visitor information and commemoration. Along with the trails and natural attractions, they give you several ways to spend your time in Le Falgoux.
