Murat combines a medieval townscape, places of remembrance and routes through the Cantal countryside. The commune is part of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne. There are different ways to plan a visit: take in a panorama of rooftops and mountains, explore historic buildings and collections, or follow routes that start in Murat or include it as a stop. Depending on whether you are interested in culture or a longer hike, these themes can take up different amounts of time during your stay.

Townscape and panorama

Medieval Murat features preserved historic buildings and a variety of architectural styles and building materials. The town cannot be reduced to a single architectural style: its traditional appearance reflects several architectural influences. Those interested in architectural history will find a different perspective here than on an outing focused on the landscape.

The Chemin de Bonnevie offers panoramic views of Murat’s rooftops and the Monts du Cantal from the Rocher de Bonnevie. The rock lies at the foot of the statue of Notre-Dame de la Haute-Auvergne. From the Rocher, the townscape and mountain scenery come together. This viewpoint provides a distinct landscape highlight alongside the historic buildings of the medieval town.

A stop or a longer route

Murat is a stop on the Via Arverna, a branch route to Santiago de Compostela that connects Clermont-Ferrand with Cahors. The town is therefore part of a pilgrimage route that continues beyond Murat. The GR 400 follows a different route: it starts in Murat, is 140 kilometres long and runs through the mid-mountains on the slopes of the Massif cantalien, Europe’s largest volcano. The circuit can be completed in eight days or less.

This distinction is useful for planning: on the Via Arverna, Murat is a stop on a longer route; the GR 400, by contrast, is a 140-kilometre route that can be completed as a circuit. If you plan to hike the GR 400, check route conditions and stage planning before setting out; conditions and route planning may change.

Passenger trains also serve Murat. They run north to Clermont-Ferrand and south to Aurillac and Figeac. As timetable details may change, it is worth checking the schedule before travelling.

Place of remembrance, architectural history and wildlife

The Mémorial de la Déportation commemorates the 103 residents of Murat who were arrested on 24 June 1944; 75 of them died in the camps. The memorial can be visited every day throughout the year, but only by prior reservation. If you plan a visit, check reservation and access arrangements before travelling.

The Chapelle Saint-Antoine has major construction phases dating from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. Its architectural history offers a different focus from the Mémorial: here, the emphasis is on several building phases, while the Mémorial commemorates a specific event and its consequences. The Maison de la Faune adds natural history collections to these themes. It is housed in a former sub-prefecture building dating from the 16th century and displays animal collections in reconstructed habitats across four floors. These include more than 8,000 species of insects, butterflies and beetles from around the world, as well as nearly 800 mammals and birds, also shown in reconstructed habitats.

If you are looking for a hotel in Murat, the focus of your trip can help with planning: a longer circuit on the GR 400 requires a different time frame than a stop on the Via Arverna. For a culture-focused stay, there are also different themes to explore—from the chapel’s construction phases and remembrance at the Mémorial to the animal collections at the Maison de la Faune. Prior reservation is explicitly required when planning a visit to the Mémorial.
