Nieudan combines historic heritage with rides on the Pédalorail des Lacs. Buildings in Nieudan include the Pigeonnier-Chapelle du Bruel and the Grange Maziol, both protected as historic monuments, as well as the parish church of Saint-Julien. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Puy-Rachat offers impressive views of the Monts du Cantal. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between buildings, views and a specific activity as distinct highlights.

Architecture in Nieudan

The Bruel complex includes a small 17th-century château. The granite-masonry building is flanked by a square tower. Bruel’s dovecote is also part of the complex. It is a well-preserved example of a building type that is rare in the Châtaigneraie and the Aurillac basin. The Pigeonnier-Chapelle du Bruel in Nieudan is a protected historic monument; it was designated by decree on 7 April 2008.

The Grange Maziol is a barn with a stable, characteristic of the Xaintrie and built in 1802. Its interior features for housing livestock and storing fodder are fully preserved. The building therefore highlights its agricultural function and preserved working spaces, while Bruel is defined by its château, granite masonry and dovecote. The Grange Maziol is also protected as a historic monument; the decree is dated 17 September 2007.

The parish church of Saint-Julien in Nieudan has a distinctive bell gable. Together with the château, barn and dovecote, it adds another architectural form to the picture. Visitors interested in architecture will find a range of building types and uses in Nieudan, rather than just a single building.

Rides on the Pédalorail des Lacs

Classic and electric Pédalorail des Lacs rides start at the former Nieudan railway station. One specific option is Circuit 3, “L’Aventure – Pont du Rouffet.”

The circuit covers a 20-kilometre round trip. Its listed features include two tunnels, a viaduct, a picnic area and a natural beach. This gives you a sense of the tour from its distance and these stops, without implying a journey time.

Views of the Monts du Cantal

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Puy-Rachat offers impressive views of the Monts du Cantal. The chapel is accessible on foot; check access details before you travel. This visit differs from the Pédalorail’s 20-kilometre round trip: here, the focus is on walking access and views of the mountain range, while the ride offers a route with several built and natural features.

To help make your choice, you can first decide whether you want to focus on historic buildings, a Pédalorail ride or the view from the chapel. The places and activities mentioned offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Nieudan.
