Virargues between heritage and landscape
Accommodation in Virargues
Virargues brings together sacred art, Romanesque architecture and rural building styles with a local storytelling tradition. The landscape and industrial history offer different themes too: the “Boucle du chemin du Lac” leads to a wetland, while the Espace Touristique de Foufouilloux provides information about diatomite. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between cultural history, a landscape trail and the history of an extracted mineral resource.
Sacred art and rural architectural history
A statue bears the names “Vierge à l'Enfant avec livre et encrier” and “Vierge à l'encrier”. It depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, a book and an inkwell. This iconography is rare in France and, to date, unique in the Cantal département. The book and inkwell define the motif and make it a distinctive subject in sacred art.
The Romanesque Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Virargues dates from the 11th century and is a small rural sanctuary. Its nave has two bays and a barrel vault; the choir has a rib vault. The number of bays and the change in vaulting styles give a clear sense of the building’s layout.
A large communal bread oven recalls a former shared practice: villagers gathered there every month to bake bread. Traditional block-built farmhouses also represent the building style of the Cantal. In this type of farmhouse, the living quarters are attached to the section with the animal stalls. This architectural connection is a defining feature of Virargues’ rural architecture.
Sainte-Reine Chapel and local tradition
The Sainte-Reine Chapel and its oratory stand beside the road towards Murat. The spring in the oratory has now dried up; it was once believed to soothe the eyes. The site is therefore linked to a former healing belief, although the spring is now in a very different state.
According to local tradition, two young people from Auxillac who had contracted an eruptive fever made a pilgrimage to Alise Sainte-Reine in Burgundy. They are said to have returned cured, bringing a statue of the martyr and relics with them. The story credits these items with making it possible to build Sainte-Reine Chapel. It links a pilgrimage, the return to Auxillac and the origins of the sanctuary in Virargues.
Wetland and diatomite
The “Boucle du chemin du Lac” loop leads to a wetland, or peat bog, known locally as “le Lac”. It runs along the edge of the area and offers views across the Alagnon valley. Here, the focus is on the landscape rather than architecture and art: the route connects the edge of the bog with the view over the valley.
The Espace Touristique de Foufouilloux provides information about the history, extraction and uses of diatomite. The focus here is on a raw material and its extraction—a different way of exploring Virargues’ history from its sacred buildings and local traditions. Tours are offered by arrangement with the company; check the current arrangements before your trip.
