Dunières offers a range of options for planning your stay: the architectural history of Saint-Martin Church, evidence of silk throwing, a cultural venue, and cycling and hiking activities. Consider whether you would prefer to spend your days exploring local history, riding the Vélorail, or taking longer walks.

Church, Tower Complex and Industrial History

The oldest parts of Saint-Martin Church date from the 11th century. The church is Romanesque-Poitevin in style and is classified as a historic monument. Three naves of equal height are among its characteristic architectural features. Saint-Martin therefore offers a tangible insight into Dunières’ architectural history—from dating its oldest parts to understanding the layout of the church interior.

The preserved tower complex in Dunières includes a tower built in the 14th century. Its collapsed battlements were restored. The church and tower thus represent different building phases: the 11th-century date refers to the oldest parts of the church, while the tower dates from the 14th century.

Another way to explore local history is Maison Malartre, a distinctive industrialist’s residence. In the 19th century, the Malartre family contributed to the development of silk throwing. The house and family history can therefore be considered separate aspects of the industrial heritage, without dating the residence itself to that century.

The family-friendly discovery trail “Sur les traces de notre passé” starts at the railway station and passes through the town centre. Its information panels cover the former railway line, the sawmill, waterways, silk throwing and the church. Individual panels may be moved or updated, so check the latest route details before setting out.

Cultural Venue and Vélorail Ride

The Micro-Folie de Dunières is a versatile cultural and events venue with a digital museum. It brings together several thousand works from numerous partner institutions and museums. The venue complements the town’s architectural and industrial history with a digital cultural offering. Exhibitions and programmes may change, so check what is currently on offer before visiting.

The Vélorail du Velay offers a 15-kilometre ride starting in Dunières. The route crosses two viaducts and passes through two tunnels. The “Les Trappeurs” route starts in Dunières and ends in St Pal–St Romain. As seasonal operations may change, check current ride availability before planning your trip.

Hiking: Compare Distance and Walking Time

The PR 117 Montgrenier hiking route is listed as 8.3 kilometres long, with a walking time of about 2 hours 30 minutes. The PR 116 Le Fouvet starts in Dunières, is 16.6 kilometres long and has an estimated walking time of about 4 hours 30 minutes. Distance and approximate walking time offer a practical comparison for planning your day: the two routes differ in both length and estimated time required.

The PR 116 passes through the fields, meadows and forests of the Haut Pays du Velay. Along the way, there are views over the Dunière valley and the Sucs. When choosing the PR 116, you can therefore take both the time required and the scenery and views into account.

Cycling Route and Other Trails

The Via Fluvia is a cycling route along a former railway line with a gentle gradient. It is suitable for cycling, roller skating and riding scooters, as well as for walks with a pushchair. A 62-kilometre section runs from Lavoûte-sur-Loire to the Tunnel du Tracol and passes through Dunières, among other places. As the route status may change, check the current route before setting out.

The range of activities includes culture, local history, a cycling route and hiking trails. The Vélorail ride has a specified distance and crosses structures and passes through tunnels, while the Via Fluvia is distinguished by its gentle gradient and the activities it accommodates. For the hikes, the different distances and approximate walking times can help you plan how much time to allow.
