Lantriac can be explored through a range of experiences: a cave complex with a long history of use, trails with published distances and difficulty levels, and leisure activities. For planning your trip, it helps to consider these topics separately. Couteaux represents cultural history; the trails offer different distances and levels of challenge, while Weekart and the “La Gare” leisure area add other activities. This way, you can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.

Cultural history in Couteaux

Couteaux is a troglodytic village. People created its caves over several levels in a vertical rock face that had been artificially exposed. These are therefore not natural cavities. The site combines a striking rock formation with a history of human use.

The site was inhabited throughout the Middle Ages and was used intermittently up to the present day. Its history is therefore not limited to the Middle Ages: use continued intermittently beyond that period. A simple one-hour round trip passes through Couteaux. Information panels along the way explain the geology and the use of the caves in the Middle Ages—two aspects that together help visitors understand the site.

Hiking trails and routes at Suc de Monet

Three hiking trails can be followed from the stadium in Lantriac. One specific option is trail T04 – Suc de Monet: it is 10.9 kilometres long and rated moderate. The start and finish are at Lantriac station. Viewpoints along the route offer views across the Velay Basin and the Mézenc Massif.

Another designated route is “Sur les traces du passé,” a difficult 17.79-kilometre mountain biking route in Lantriac. Compared with T04, the two trails differ in both length and stated difficulty. The “Circuit du suc de Monet” loop offers a different focus: this mountain biking route goes around Suc de Monet, starts at the ice rink at Lantriac station, and is rated easy. It is suitable for family rides. These options offer different details to guide your choice, without judging the routes by a single criterion.

More activities

The three hiking trails mentioned above also start at the stadium, adding another way to explore on foot alongside the designated routes. The intercommunal “La Gare” leisure area has a synthetic ice rink. This is a separate leisure option alongside the trails and the cultural history of Couteaux.

Weekart offers electric karting in Lantriac. The indoor karting track is 400 metres long. The venue also has billiards, air hockey, darts and a retro arcade game. So, alongside outdoor activities, there are also various indoor options to choose from. As activity availability may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings before your visit.

These options offer clear distinctions to help you plan your trip: Couteaux combines caves and history with a one-hour circular walk, while the trails described have specific distances and difficulty ratings. The leisure area and Weekart add ice skating, karting and other games to the mix. Which of these topics you prioritise can help determine your choice of stay in Lantriac.
