Lapte: Discover the Church, Lake and Trails
Accommodation in Lapte
Lapte offers several distinct points of interest to help you plan your trip: the Église Saint-Jean, Lac de Lavalette and the PR523 Le balcon du Velay circular trail. When choosing a hotel in Lapte, it is especially helpful to consider whether you are visiting for its architectural history, activities on the water or a particular hike. These three themes offer different experiences; information about the season, reservations and walking time can help you plan a stay that suits you.
A church with historical and scientific details
The Église Saint-Jean de Lapte was built between 1888 and 1896 by architect Ernest Tracol. It replaced a medieval castle chapel dating from the 12th century. The present-day building is therefore part of a history that goes back to the Middle Ages. The church also houses a Foucault pendulum: it is 17 metres tall, weighs just under 80 kilograms and makes the Earth's rotation visible. Its unusual dimensions give this scientific point of interest a distinctive presence alongside the history of the church's construction. A visit to the pendulum is possible by prior reservation; because access is seasonal, be sure to confirm your visit in advance for your chosen date. The bell tower is also notably tall: at 51 metres, it is the highest in the Haute-Loire département. The Église Saint-Jean thus brings together architectural history, a scientific instrument and the height of its tower as distinct features.
At Lac de Lavalette: water and activities on land
Lac de Lavalette lies between Lapte and Saint-Jeures and covers 220 hectares of water. It has been awarded the “Aire Respirando” designation. The Base de loisirs du lac de Lavalette in Lapte includes an outdoor playground with leisure and sports equipment, as well as an Espace Loisirs Orientation. The latter features four orienteering courses through woodland and along the shores of the Haute-Loire's largest lake. The base also includes an arboretum.
Activities on the lake include catamaran sailing, pedal boating, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and trips in an electric boat. On land, facilities are available for bicycles and mountain bikes; there are also opportunities for hiking, trail running and running, as well as fishing. This gives you a choice of water-based activities and different ways to get active on land. Free supervised swimming is available at Lac de Lavalette in July and August. As this is a seasonal offering, check before travelling whether lifeguard supervision is scheduled for your visit.
PR523 Le balcon du Velay: a waymarked circular route
The waymarked PR523 Le balcon du Velay circular hiking trail starts at Lapte town hall. The easy route is 5.8 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of around 1 hour 30 minutes. It includes 88 metres of descent and 87 metres of ascent, so the elevation figures are almost balanced. The trail passes below the church and then leaves the village to the north. Its length, approximate duration and elevation gain and loss make it easy to assess. It also differs in timing from the seasonal swimming offer: the hike is described by its route details, while supervised swimming is specifically limited to July and August.
