Discover Le Chambon-Sur-Lignon
Accommodation in Le Chambon-Sur-Lignon
Le Chambon-sur-Lignon brings together sites of remembrance, religious history, contemporary art and nature along the Lignon. These different points of interest can help you decide where to stay: consider whether you are mainly interested in the town’s history, cultural activities or outdoor trails.
Market and local produce
The municipality’s market focuses on local producers, short supply chains and organic farming. At the Le Chambon-sur-Lignon market, producers and processors offer meat, charcuterie, cheese and honey; there are also artisan bakers. If local food is a factor in planning your trip, the market gives you both an impression of its focus and specific information about the types of products on offer.
Remembrance and local history
The tour of the Lieu de Mémoire presents civilian, spiritual and armed forms of resistance. The memorial space displays testimonies from people involved in the rescue effort, as well as from refugees and resistance fighters. The two areas therefore focus both on different forms of resistance and on the experiences of the people involved and affected.
The Parcours de la Mémoire combines a guided tour of the village with an exhibition at the railway station. It covers refugees, the “Justes” and Protestantism. Guided tours take place seasonally; group visits are possible by reservation. Check availability before your trip.
The history of the Temple du Chambon-sur-Lignon can also be placed in a historical context: the present-day temple was built in the 1820s to replace the first temple, which was destroyed in 1679 during the Wars of Religion. The inscription “Aimez-vous les uns les autres” (“Love one another”) appears on the gable. The religious history also includes the fact that, after Reformed worship was banned, local residents maintained a secret service at the Désert. In 1990, Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and other villages on the plateau were recognised as “Justes parmi les nations” (Righteous Among the Nations).
Art and culture
The Espace d’art contemporain Les Roches adds a focus on contemporary art. The venue includes a gallery, a workshop and an art space. Events held there include exhibitions, conferences, concerts and film screenings; the programme may change. Alongside local history, different forms of contemporary cultural activity can therefore also be part of your stay.
Hiking and nature along the Lignon
Le Chambon-sur-Lignon lies along the Lignon and has a well-preserved natural heritage, making it a destination for hiking and fishing. The PR039 Le circuit du Plateau hike crosses the Plateau des Justes and offers views of the Sucs, Pic du Lizieux and Mont Mézenc. Information about this hike was updated in June 2026; check conditions before setting out.
Two other named routes can be distinguished by their starting points: the Boucle famille vers le golf starts at the golf course car park in Romières, 43400 Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. The Balade les Caminous starts at the Piscine du Fraisse car park, also in 43400 Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Check local conditions before setting out.
