Saint-Front: Church, Waterfall and Volcanic Lake
Accommodation in Saint-Front
When looking for a hotel for a trip to Saint-Front, you can plan around culture, nature and seasonal activities. The waterfall carries considerably more water during the spring snowmelt than in summer, and some hikes take place in specific months. The church, lake, circular route and climbing area each offer a different focus.
Romanesque architecture and heritage
The Église Saint-Front is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. It was classified as a historic monument by decree on 15 March 1909. Its construction and the date of its monument classification therefore mark two distinct stages in its history. Architectural features include the only comb-style bell tower on the plateau and a balcony made from stones from the Chartreuse de Bonnefoi.
In Bigorre, the thatched-roof house ecomuseum is classified as a Maison de Pays and is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. Public access arrangements may vary, so check access details before visiting.
Water, lake and hiking trails
The Cascade de Souteyros is 15 to 20 metres high. It carries little water in summer, while its flow is considerably stronger during the spring snowmelt. A marked footpath starts in the village of Souteyros and leads to the Cascade de Souteyros. Check the trail status again before your trip.
The Lac de Saint-Front is of volcanic origin and lies entirely within a Natura 2000 site. Find out about local access conditions before visiting. The lake is notable for its volcanic origin and its location within the protected area; for the Cascade, the main factor affecting when to visit is its seasonally variable water flow.
The PR479 Circuit des Chaumières offers specific distance and duration details: the circular route is 15.73 kilometres long, is marked as a Petite Randonnée and takes four hours. Check the route details and markings again before setting off. This gives you both a distance and a time estimate to help plan your day.
Climbing and seasonal events
The Les Roches climbing area lies between Saint-Front and Fay-sur-Lignon. It has 49 routes across three sectors. The routes are 10 to 60 metres long, with grades ranging from 3 to 7c. The volcanic rock consists of phonolite, trachyte or rhyolite. As the routes available may change, check the details again before climbing.
Event dates also vary throughout the year. The Fête de la chèvre has been held every year on the third Sunday in July in Saint-Front since 1999. If you plan your trip around the festival, check the specific programme in advance. Saint Front Escapades organises the “La Draille blanche” hike in January and the “Rando Gourmande” in September. For these events too, it is advisable to confirm the dates before your trip.
Saint Front Escapades rents out snowshoes, cross-country skiing equipment and sledges by reservation. Check seasonal availability in advance and reserve if you plan to use this equipment. This allows you to plan the listed winter activities separately from the hikes in January and September and the July festival.
