Saint-Pal-de-Senouire combines landscapes, hiking options and cultural and historical landmarks. For your trip planning, these themes offer different points of focus: forests and heathland, a named highest point, the Senouire River, as well as activities on foot and traces of local history. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Saint-Pal-de-Senouire, you can first decide whether natural surroundings, hiking formats or cultural heritage should have the greatest influence on your choice.

Landscape between forest, heathland and river

Saint-Pal-de-Senouire has 1,095 hectares of forest and heathland, representing 59.67 percent of the municipality’s area. The figure in hectares indicates the area, while the percentage shows its share of the municipal territory. The Massif de Chantelauze is another topographical landmark: at 1,204 metres, it is the highest point in the municipality. The area share and elevation offer different ways to orient yourself as you explore the landscape.

The Senouire also provides a distinct geographical reference. The river initially flows from north to south and, after Julliard, from northwest to southwest; it crosses the municipality for a distance of 6 to 7 kilometres. Taken together, the forests and heathland, the Massif de Chantelauze and the Senouire represent three different perspectives: land area, highest point and river course.

Hiking trails and different activity formats

Saint-Pal-de-Senouire has the “Sentier de randonnée de Vedières ou des 3 passerelles” hiking trail. Bique-Bag offers hikes and walks with goats along paths in the Gorges de l’Allier and the Parc du Livradois-Forez; the provider is based in Serres, Saint-Pal-de-Senouire. A named hiking trail and a provider offering several formats are different points of reference.

Bique-Bag’s offerings include half-day and full-day hikes, storytelling walks, foraging walks, two-day hikes and animal-assisted activities. In terms of duration, you can compare the half-day and full-day formats with the two-day hikes.

A hike was scheduled for Saturday during the Fête patronale on 29 and 30 August. If you are planning your trip around a future edition, please check the dates and programme for that year.

Church, priory and local history

The Priory of Saint-Pal-de-Senouire belonged to the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu from 1217. The Church of Saint-Paul contains a statue of the Virgin Mary made of carved, polychrome-painted and gilded wood; it probably dates from the early 19th century. The priory’s affiliation from 1217 and the statue’s probable date point to markedly different periods.

Another, different landmark is in Vedières-Hautes, where there was a castle or fortified house. Alongside the priory and church, this place broadens the cultural themes to include a historic building type beyond religious sites.
