Solignac-sur-Loire offers a variety of points of interest to help you plan your trip: a Romanesque church and the former castle ruins, the Cascade de la Beaume, and trails for hiking and cycling. The route information helps you distinguish the walk to the panoramic viewpoint from a longer hike. The Foire à la patate, held annually in autumn, is another event that may shape your stay.

Saint-Vincent Church and Castle Remains

The partly protected Romanesque Saint-Vincent Church has a nave with a pointed barrel vault. Burial niches and bas-reliefs are set into the south wall; the apse was renovated at the end of the 15th century. Together with the adjoining ruins of the former castle, the church forms a heritage complex. The cemetery is located within the castle ruins. The church’s architecture and the surviving parts of the former fortifications thus share a historical setting at this site.

Today, a few remains of the castle’s fortifications and part of the square tower wall survive. The church also houses the sculpture group Vierge noire à l'Enfant dite Notre-Dame de Solignac. Abri Laborde, also known as Abri de Baume Vallée, adds an archaeological dimension: the rock shelter is associated with the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. The cultural heritage thus spans Romanesque architecture, medieval castle remains and a site from two prehistoric periods.

Cascade de la Beaume and Hiking Trails

The Cascade de la Beaume is a 27-metre-high waterfall, formed by the erosion of the basalt plateau by the Ourzie River. It lies at an altitude of 900 metres between Solignac-sur-Loire and Le Brignon. From the car park, a 20-minute walk along the river leads to the panoramic viewpoint at the cascade. This gives you a specific timeframe for the walk to the viewpoint.

For a longer hike, try PR067: the route is 10.6 kilometres long, rated difficult and listed as taking about three hours. It includes a section along the river and follows the voie verte back to Solignac-sur-Loire. Comparing the time estimates makes the difference between the walk to the viewpoint and the longer route clear: 20 minutes versus an approximate hiking time of three hours.

Via Velay and Foire à la patate

The Via Velay is a voie verte for pedestrians and cyclists, converted from the former railway line between Le Puy-en-Velay and Langogne. Another structure in Solignac-sur-Loire is the 184-metre-long Viaduc de la Gagne. The information describes different aspects: for the Via Velay, the focus is on the route’s former use and its current purpose for pedestrians and cyclists; for the viaduct, it is on its length.

The Foire à la patate takes place annually in autumn. Its programme includes a market featuring local producers, potato sales and family activities. If an event affects your travel dates, check the dates for that year’s edition. This allows you to plan your trip around the specific autumn offering without assuming a particular event date.

The route information provides different timeframes; the Via Velay and the Foire à la patate add cycling and a seasonal event to the options.
