Vergezac offers different ways to shape a trip: challenging hikes, a private guided tour by prior arrangement, and architectural and garden heritage. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to start by asking which of these themes you want to define your stay. Information about the trails, Château du Thiolent, and Eglise Saint-Rémy provides concrete starting points.

Hiking in Vergezac

The PR462 La Croix de Fourgoulas is a difficult 11.5-kilometer loop hike that starts and ends in Vergezac. The « Les Trésors du Passé » trail crosses the municipality. These provide different points of reference for planning your trip: the PR462 is a loop that starts and finishes in Vergezac, while « Les Trésors du Passé » focuses on crossing the municipality. The PR462’s difficult rating and distance will help you gauge how much hiking to include in your stay. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and available information; for « Les Trésors du Passé », also take the trail markings on site into account.

Château du Thiolent and its grounds

The grounds of Château du Thiolent cover five hectares and were laid out around the château. Since March 4, 1991, they have been listed as a protected garden under heritage protection regulations and are privately owned. The estate is inhabited year-round by a farming family who work the land themselves. The garden is therefore part of an estate that is both inhabited and farmed. Château et parc du Thiolent is also listed in the Haute-Loire inventory of historic monuments. The owner offers private guided tours by prior arrangement. If you are interested, arrange your visit before your trip.

Church and cross: different historical details

Eglise Saint-Rémy brings together several architectural features: buttresses articulate its west façade, and the portal has Romanesque capitals. A bell-cote gable, added in the 16th century, completes the building. Romanesque details and a later addition can thus be seen side by side. If you are interested in architecture, the façade, portal, and tower each offer a specific feature through which to explore the different forms and periods.

The Croix de Fourgoulas offers a different perspective. Made of arkose sandstone, the cross is dated 1554 and is considered an example of the folk art of its time. While the description of the church focuses on several architectural features, the cross is a single, dated object. Together, the two offer a look at religious art through both a building’s architecture and an independent work of art.

A festive tradition of the high plateaus

La Tuaille is another part of rural culture passed down through the generations. It was a rural family celebration originating on the high plateaus of Haute-Loire, Ardèche, and Lozère, and was usually held between December and March. Its association with the winter months gives this festive tradition a different seasonal character from the architectural and garden features you can explore in Vergezac. Alongside hiking and architecture, it offers a cultural-historical perspective on rural festive traditions.
