Vielprat offers two specific perspectives for planning a trip: circular trails for outdoor activities and local heritage including a church, cemetery and historic sites. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to choose your focus in advance: are you interested in hiking, mountain biking or trail running, the GR3 long-distance route, or Église Saint-Martin? This makes it possible to think of Vielprat both as a destination for local trails and as a place on a longer crossing.

Nature and trails

Vielprat is one of eleven municipalities included in the Natura 2000 site “Gorges de la Loire et affluents partie sud.” This designation gives the nature-focused perspective a specific context. Vielprat has circular hiking, mountain biking and trail-running routes; they are Respirando-certified, maintained and signposted. The selection names three types of activities that you can consider as distinct focuses for your trip. If you are planning around outdoor exercise, you can first decide which of these activities you want to include in your itinerary, then consider the circular trails as a local part of your trip.

The GR3 Sources et Gorges de la Loire long-distance route is different from the circular trails. It passes through Vielprat and is a 169.4-kilometre, ten-day crossing between Aurec-sur-Loire and Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc. The distance and duration refer to the entire crossing. This is important when planning: a ten-day long-distance route is not the same as a single circular trail in Vielprat. If you choose the route, you can think of your stay as part of a connection between the two endpoints; if you are looking at the circular trails, you can focus on the types of activities mentioned locally.

Church, cemetery and historic sites

Église Saint-Martin de Vielprat is a Romanesque church built in 1870. Its comb-style bell tower has three bells. Inside, the church preserves two white marble altars, a historic confessional and a painting signed by Amanda Fougère. Four figurative stained-glass windows depict, among others, Saint Martin, Saint Joseph, the Virgin and Child, and Saint François-Régis. The construction date, tower, furnishings and windows offer different perspectives on the same church, from its date and imagery to the objects it has preserved.

The old cemetery adjoins the church. A local description from 2020 depicts moss-covered stone walls, leaning old gravestones, rusty crosses and crucifixes, some partly obscured by vegetation. It mentions around fifty graves and an unobstructed view of Salettes. As the physical condition may change, what it looks like today may differ from the 2020 description.

There is also an iron cross in Vielprat’s church square, which was restored and put back on its stone plinth. Mas de Testud is a private heritage property dating from the 14th century. Maison forte de la Bastide is a private fortified site dating from the 16th century. These two places add historic points of reference from different centuries; their private status is part of how each should be understood.

Plan your stay around your interests

A hiking trip on the GR3 refers to the entire ten-day crossing, while the circular trails represent the three types of activities mentioned locally. The heritage focus is on the details of Église Saint-Martin, the adjoining old cemetery and other historic sites.
