Villeneuve-D'allier combines hiking and cycling routes with specific local history. The marked PR341 circular trail runs along the edge of the Allier gorges through areas with stone terrace walls; the Via Allier reaches the village on cycling stage 12. The church and suspension bridge add construction dates and a local crossing history to these landscape themes. You can therefore plan your stay around either route planning or historical points of interest.

Hiking along the edge of the Allier gorges

PR341 Les Terrasses de la Ribeyre is a marked circular hiking trail starting in Villeneuve-D'allier. It runs along the edge of the Allier gorges and passes through areas with stone terrace walls. This brings two distinct landscape features together along the route: the edge of the gorges and the terraced areas defined by their walls. If, while hiking, you want to notice the terrace structures as well as the river landscape, PR341 offers a clear thematic focus.

Cycling on the Via Allier

Via Allier cycling stage 12 runs from Brioude to Lavoûte-Chilhac, reaches Villeneuve-D'allier and then continues along the D585. There are numerous views of the river along the route. Unlike PR341, this is a cycling stage between two named places; the hiking trail is a marked circular route starting in Villeneuve. The two planning options therefore differ in both mode of transport and route format. If you include the cycling stage in your trip, check road conditions before setting off, as they can change.

The church and local crossing history

The Église de la Nativité de la Sainte-Vierge in Villeneuve-D'allier was built between 1825 and 1827. It stands at the end of a narrow lane on the left bank of the Allier, opposite Saint-Ilpize. Its construction followed a memorable flood in which women from Villeneuve drowned while having to cross the Allier by ferry to reach Saint-Ilpize. The story connects the building’s location with its origins: the church faces the place the women were travelling to by ferry. Its construction date, riverside location and crossing history are therefore distinct but interconnected points of reference in the village’s history.

The suspension bridge as a historical landmark

The Pont suspendu de Saint-Ilpize was built in 1879 and is partly located in Villeneuve-D'allier. It has been listed as a historic monument since October 2, 2015. The construction date and listing represent different historical milestones. Compared with the Église de la Nativité de la Sainte-Vierge, which was built between 1825 and 1827 and is connected with a local ferry crossing, the suspension bridge’s history is made tangible through its construction and listing dates. On a suspension bridge, the deck hangs from supporting cables.
