Discover Châtel-Guyon through its thermal offerings, buildings connected with its spa history, and routes for walking or cycling. The places and routes offer different themes and practical details for planning your trip.

Spa Thermal and Spa Architecture

At the Spa Thermal, wellness treatments combine the mineral-rich thermal water from Châtel-Guyon with Estime&Sens organic cosmetics. A half-day admission includes a thermal pool, an outdoor whirlpool, a solarium, hammams, experience showers, a relaxation room, and a tea room. Availability of the facilities depends on the resort’s conditions; individual treatments may change. Check the latest information when planning your spa visit.

The Théâtre de Châtel-Guyon is a multidisciplinary venue in the town centre, overlooking the Parc Thermal. It is also listed in France’s supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The theatre thus combines its role as a venue with a recognised connection to the town’s architectural heritage.

The Grands-Thermes tell another chapter in the town’s spa history. The present-day building replaced the earlier Brosson establishment in 1906; it has been closed since 2004. Inside the vestibule, red marble columns, two horseshoe staircases, and a coffered ceiling define the architecture. These details give the building a character distinct from the open parkland and make the vestibule’s design easy to appreciate.

Parc Thermal and Butte du Calvaire

The Parc Thermal was laid out mainly between 1905 and 1912 and stretches along the banks of the Sardon. The park contains several drinking pavilions or former shops. The grounds thus link the course of the river with architectural traces of the town’s spa history. For a stay focused on this subject, the park and the Grands-Thermes offer different perspectives: on one side, a site created over several years along the riverbank; on the other, a building with a strikingly designed vestibule.

The Butte du Calvaire is also among the sites described as part of the town’s architectural and historical heritage. It stands on the site of the former castle, where there is a mission cross and an orientation panel. The former castle site, the cross, and the panel give this place a different focus from the thermal buildings and the park.

Cycling and Hiking Tours

Birlou is an easy, family-friendly circular cycling route covering 13.2 kilometres. It starts at the Office de Tourisme in Châtel-Guyon and follows the former Riom–Châtel-Guyon railway line. The line has now been converted into a voie douce, a traffic-free greenway known as the Thermal Express. The route passes over Mont Chalusset and then reaches the Parc Thermal. Route conditions and service information may change; check them before setting out.

The Châtel-Guyon circular hiking trail is also easy and follows a loop. It is 7.5 kilometres long; the stated duration is about two hours and 15 minutes, depending on the weather. This trail also follows the former Thermal Express railway line. From 1912 to 1971, the train carried spa visitors from Riom to the spa town of Châtel-Guyon. The hike can therefore also be connected with a specific chapter in the history of transport.

The stated details differ for each tour: the Birlou route focuses on cycling distance, while the circular hiking trail also gives an approximate duration. When comparing the routes, you can therefore take both the distance and the time available into account.
