Discover Saint-Nectaire
Accommodation in Saint-Nectaire
Saint-Nectaire brings together regional cheese-making traditions, volcanic craftsmanship, Romanesque architecture and a landscape where river and lava flow meet. When choosing a hotel, consider which of these aspects you are most interested in during your stay: farm visits and cheese, history and architecture, or views over the Chaudefour glacial valley. The attractions offer different experiences, from visiting underground spaces to taking in views of a named valley.
Cheese and farms in Saint-Nectaire
Saint-Nectaire AOP cheese is associated with the pastures of Saint-Nectaire as its place of origin. Many farms offer visitors the opportunity to observe how the cheese is made. If you plan to visit a farm, arrange access directly with the producer concerned.
Saint-Nectaire is one of the six Massif du Sancy municipalities awarded the Famille Plus label. As label status can change, check it if it is important to your current travel plans.
Volcanic springs and craft traditions
A visit to the Fontaines Pétrifiantes de Saint-Nectaire includes an underground petrifying grotto and access to the production workshops. Volcanic springs have been used there for two centuries to make decorative limestone objects. The family business was founded in 1821. The visit thus combines the grotto with a craft whose products are made on site. Check the current visiting arrangements before planning your visit, as schedules and procedures may change.
The Mystères de Farges offer another encounter with the past. The route leads through four former troglodytic dwellings carved into the rock more than 1,000 years ago. Here, “troglodytic” describes the rock-carved form of the living spaces. Unlike the workshops, this visit focuses not on making objects but on how such spaces were used in the past.
Romanesque architecture of the Auvergne
Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Cornadore is one of the five major Romanesque churches of the Auvergne. It offers an architectural highlight alongside the craft and troglodytic themes. For culture-focused travellers, it provides a distinct point of interest: the focus here is on understanding a church within the Romanesque architecture of the Auvergne, not on making objects or using spaces carved into the rock.
Waterfall and viewpoints
The Cascade de Saillant is seven metres high. It forms where the Couze Chambon cuts through a lava flow. In addition to its height, the relationship between the river and the lava flow is a defining feature of the waterfall.
At the exit from Saint-Nectaire towards Murol, the Puy d'Éraigne is located on the RD996; from there, you can enjoy views over the Chaudefour glacial valley. The two landscape experiences are clearly different: at the Cascade, the river meets the lava flow; at the Puy d'Éraigne, the view is over a named valley. This can help you choose the nature-focused aspect of your trip more precisely, without treating the two experiences as the same.
