Saint-Victor-Montvianeix offers several specific themes to help you plan your trip: the Natura 2000 site “Bois Noirs”, the Tourbière du Sapey, two walking routes with published distances, and the wayside cross of Montvianeix. Nature, hiking and cultural heritage therefore offer distinct areas of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Nature and peat bog landscapes

The Natura 2000 site “Bois Noirs” also covers Saint-Victor-Montvianeix. Its total area is 683.5 hectares, and the site is divided into 16 sections. The area figure refers to the protected site as a whole, while the sections describe how it is divided. Saint-Victor-Montvianeix is one of the seven municipalities concerned. The site lies in a mid-mountain region and includes habitats of Community interest, primarily beech forest habitats, various types of peat bog and wet meadows.

The Tourbière du Sapey is located in the Massif des Bois Noirs in the municipality of Saint-Victor-Montvianeix. It is one of the sources of the Credogne, a tributary of the Allier. Its habitats form a sequence: small ombrotrophic hummocks, wooded peat bogs, minerotrophic birch bogs and a pine forest area that is more open on the hummocks. For the hummocks, “ombrotrophic” means that water and nutrients come mainly from precipitation; “minerotrophic” refers to the influence of mineral-rich soil water or groundwater. The different types of peat bog can therefore be distinguished by their water and nutrient sources, not just by their vegetation.

In a direct comparison of distances, it is 1.6 km shorter than the Le puy de Montoncel circular route, which has a stated duration of 4 hours and 30 minutes.
