Discover Tauves: crafts, churches and trails
Accommodation in Tauves
Tauves combines a location on the edge of the Artense Plateau with regional crafts, historic buildings and hiking trails. The town lies on the west-southwestern slope of the Sancy Massif. This gives you a clear question to consider when choosing your destination: should your stay focus more on craftsmanship, architectural history or the landscape around the trails described here? Each theme offers a different emphasis and different starting points for planning your trip.
Location and orientation
The D922 runs through Tauves, connecting northern Cantal, northern Corrèze and the Clermont-Ferrand area. The landscape is also useful for getting your bearings in the region: Tauves is on the west-southwestern slope of the Sancy Massif and on the edge of the Artense Plateau. These two details describe different aspects of the town—its connections between regions and the surroundings in which Tauves is located.
Crafts and culture
The Artisanat Rural association has been based in Tauves since 1974. It promotes the work and varied techniques of craftspeople in the region. The Artisanat Rural shop brings together more than 70 craftspeople and a wide variety of creations; it also offers public demonstrations of regional crafts. If you are interested in craftsmanship, you can explore both the creations and the techniques presented.
The local events calendar includes, among other things, the Salon des métiers d’art. In 2026, the Salle des expositions Jean-Jacques Faussot is presenting a seasonal exhibition program. If an exhibition or the salon is important to your trip planning, check the relevant event dates in advance.
Churches and architectural history
The Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité dates from the 12th century and was fortified in the 14th century. It has been classified as a Monument historique since February 11, 1908. The two dates illustrate its architectural history: the Romanesque building was fortified later.
The Chapelle Sainte-Madeleine is located in Granges, in Tauves, below and outside the enclosure of the Château de Granges. It probably dates from the 17th century and probably commemorates the former castle chapel. Both its dating and its historical context are therefore considered probable. This distinguishes it from the Church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité, whose construction date and classification are specifically dated.
Hiking trails and landscape
For La Chaleille–Tauves, the distance, duration and trail markings are specified: the circular hiking route is 14 kilometers long, takes 3 hours and 45 minutes, and is marked with yellow trail markers. This information provides a practical guide if you want to plan a hike with a specified time commitment.
Le Burandou is described as a walking trail. From Tauves, access is via the D922 toward Bort-les-Orgues. The trail crosses a bocage plateau and offers views of the Burande Valley and the Sancy Massif. The route to the Chapelle de Granges offers views of the Sancy Massif and the Cantal Mountains.
The landscapes also differ: La Chaleille follows centuries-old trails lined with numerous crosses and offers views of the Monts Dore and the Sancy Massif. The route to the Chapelle de Granges focuses on views of the Sancy and Cantal, while Le Burandou features the Burande Valley and Sancy. This lets you compare the trails by the landscapes described; only La Chaleille–Tauves is also given a specific duration here.
