Vernet-la-Varenne is located within the Parc naturel régional du Livradois-Forez. For planning your trip, Château de Montfort and the Maison de l’Améthyste, the Plan d’eau du Vernet, and the various hiking and outdoor activities offer different options. This can help you decide whether culture, water or a longer trail should be the focus of your trip.

Château de Montfort and the Maison de l’Améthyste

Château de Montfort is a castle complex dating from the 12th century that was remodelled in the 17th century. It overlooks the town centre and the lake at Vernet. The Maison de l’Améthyste is located on the château’s ground floor. Activities and visits there introduce visitors to amethyst, which is characteristic of the region. During the 2026 visitor season, the Maison de l’Améthyste’s Geosite Museum can be visited free of charge and independently; a time slot must be reserved for all other activities.

The floors and seasons also shape what is on offer: temporary exhibitions are shown on the upper floor of the château during the summer season. The exhibition programme may vary. If you are planning an activity other than visiting the Geosite Museum, you will need to reserve a time slot.

Lake, swimming and local produce

The artificial Plan d’eau du Vernet covers three hectares and is also located within the Parc naturel régional du Livradois-Forez. It is the only lake in the Pays d’Issoire where supervised swimming is available daily from 1 July to 31 August, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. As supervision is seasonal, check the hours before you travel. Pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards are also available for hire at the lake in July and August; check that this seasonal service is operating before your trip, too.

Another specific place to find local produce is the producers’ market on Place Saint-Roch in Vernet-la-Varenne. It is held regularly on Monday mornings and offers food and local products. If the market day matters to your plans, check the date before you travel.

Hiking: compare distance and time

Le moulin de la Rode is an easy 11.5-kilometre circular hike that takes approximately three hours and 30 minutes. The route leads to the remains of the Moulin de la Rode. The Circuit de la chapelle des Fiallins is 13 kilometres long and takes around four hours. Check local route conditions before setting out on this route.

The blue circular route No. 14, Entre le Vernet et Chaméane, covers a longer distance and takes more time. It starts in Vernet-la-Varenne and runs through hilly countryside west of the Monts du Livradois, with numerous viewpoints. Over 24.2 kilometres, it involves 720 metres of ascent and 720 metres of descent. Depending on your pace, the circuit takes between two hours and 35 minutes and five hours and ten minutes. So the routes differ in more than just distance: this trail description also includes elevation gain and loss, and a considerably variable estimated time.

More outdoor options

The start of Espace VTT n°1 offers numerous signposted trails. Mountain bikes, electric mountain bikes, electric scooters and helmets are available for hire. A different experience is offered by the permanent orienteering course at La Geneste Haute: it is dedicated to rural and sporting heritage and includes 60 permanently marked checkpoints. The two options have different focuses—signposted trails with rentals on the one hand, and a permanently marked course themed around local heritage on the other.
